I can't resist sharing a fabulous story of what happened a few hours ago. Kathirvel, from Tirunelveli, logged into the *Hindi Diwas* session by mistake, thinking it was an English workshop on creative fiction. He barely knew Hindi and could have logged off right away. Instead, he chose to stay, paying attention to every word. He typed his questions in English and participated in the session, despite his unfamiliarity with the language. At the end of the session, our Hindi mentor, #RashmiChoudhary, asked Kathirvel why he stayed, even though he didn’t understand the language. His reply was simple yet meaningful: "I didn’t understand Hindi, but it sounded so sweet." Katha Utsav workshops aim to spark creativity and inculcate a love for reading and writing. But Kathirvel’s experience showed us something even more important. It isn’t just about learning a language or techniques. It is about how stories and creativity go beyond regions. Just a few days back, I appeared for an interview in a reputed school, and a shocking question was asked by the principal, I was constantly thinking for 3 days what actually she wanted to know. Actually, My schooling is done? from UP Board and I have completed my graduation, post graduation and B.ED. from a government college? affiliated to a state university. I have been teaching English for 8 years, and my communication skills are competent. There were two things, I was trying to figure out:She asked me many questions which I answered and suddenly she asked - why have you studied from the Hindi Medium why not from the English medium? I was astonished and not finding the exact words to explain. Isn't it biased or prejudiced about Hindi Medium schools. If she wanted to know about my skills, she should have taken my demonstration before the class.?The second thing is the school was looking for a full time teacher, while I clearly mentioned in my resume for a part time opportunity. Still they called me for an interview. Why?Well,? I? left the interview hall after some time as they only needed a full time? teacher.But I'm still finding out the answer whether education from Hindi Medium lessens your skills? This is the very first time I was made feeling inferior because of my Hindi medium Education.

I was told my entire childhood that knowing good English is the only way to prove my competence. Entered college in Delhi and was so fascinated by the fluency of people speaking English. (coming from Hindi heartland, that's a big surprise!) Started feeling that it was time for me to act and be like them, after all it seemed so cool! In parallel, I listened to them more closely. What they said appeared good but was it all logical? Probably not. Thought a bit more carefully: does speaking fluently with fancy words mean you are good at communication? Found a good mentor who faced a similar situation, but he taught me more important things—structuring ideas, flag posting, delivering ideas slowly, taking feedback cues, adjusting to the listener, summarizing thoughts for clarity, etc. Then it all made sense. It should have never been about just good English but in-fact delivering it effectively. This also improved my Hindi and Gujarati speaking skills because at the core it was not about what language I used but how I used them. Oh, by the way, even my mentor and I discussed ideas of speaking good english in Hindi and continue to do so. Next time you hear someone say "English is the only way to prove competence," don’t forget to reply, "aisa nai hain, aapko bas ideas theek se communicate karna sikhna hain" (or whatever language he/she can understand you best in).
