Since Texas Machine-Gun & Ordnance is the country’s largest LMT Defense M203 40mm grenade-launcher distributor, we often get calls from #LawEnforcement & #Police departments about purchasing M203s for #LessLethal use. While an M203 can be pressed into a less-lethal role, it typically is a poor choice for such an application. ? The M203 is designed to chamber & fire the 40x46mm cartridge. The grenade-launcher developed from the age-old problem of wanting to “blow thine enemies to tiny bits” when you are not close enough to “lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe”. ? As a result, the M203 is an extraordinarily rugged & reliable weapon that you can issue to a knuckle-dragging infantryman who scored “potato” on the ASVAB, to use as a hammer for tent stakes & it will still function as a weapon. The ability to be mounted to an M16/M4 or other #Firearms, simplifies the issuing & employment of the launcher for #Military purposes. ? But features which make it a great military weapon, also make it a poor LE weapon. ? Firstly we have the “YouTube effect”, where trudging around with a “grenade-launcher” isn’t going to look very good on #SocialMedia. While a 40mm “less-lethal launcher”, such as the ALS launcher in the picture will chamber & fire any 40x46 munitions, it has a very different connotation than an M203. This is especially true if it is mounted to a rifle. Certain applications such as #SWAT where intimidation & ability to have both a lethal & less-lethal option on the same weapon is a desired effect, but that is an exception. ? Next is the limited ability to accept certain type of less-lethal cartridges. Most all military 40mm rounds are 40x46mm. But civilian 40mm less-lethal rounds are often longer than 46mm. Due to the M203’s design, it is limited in how long of a 40mm round it can accept. So an M203 is often only able to fire baton & barricade penetrator rounds. For applications such as SWAT, this may not be a problem. But to really harness the capabilities of the 40mm, a break-action launcher has tangible advantages of not being limited by the length of rounds. ? Finally we have cost. An M203 without a mounting system runs about 50% more than the ALS launcher which doesn’t need any mounting system & is ready to go out of the box. The LMT’s stand-alone M203 is a really slick system, but costs more than double what the ALS launcher costs. ? Like the clerk at Ammu-Nation in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, “ain't my business what you do with it”, when an LE agency wants to spend money on suboptimal less-lethal weapons such as an M203. But there certainly are better options for LE use than the M203.

Following #Ramstein 22, #Ukraine will receive another batch of YPR-765 armoured personnel carriers from the #Netherlands. This was reported by?Censor.NET?with reference to the?website?of the Ministerie van Defensie. It is noted that the ministry will supply Ukraine with armoured vehicles at the request of Volodymyr Zelenskyy. ‘It is important that we continue to support Ukraine. Their struggle is also ours. These types of armoured vehicles are very important for Ukraine. They are agile, can move troops quickly and can be deployed for reconnaissance, offensive and defensive purposes. Remotely controlled weapons provide additional security for the shooter,’ said Defence Minister?Kaisa Ollongren?after the Ramstein Contact Group meeting. The ministry does not name the exact date of arrival of the armoured personnel carriers in Ukraine. However, they promise that the YPRs will be supplied ‘in the nearest future’. It is known that the Netherlands has supplied?207 YPRs?of various types to Ukraine. YPR characteristics The YPR-765?is a #Dutch vehicle based on the #American M113 armoured vehicle. It is equipped with a 12 mm machine gun as standard. However, if necessary, it can be replaced with a 25 mm cannon, a Browning M2 machine gun and other weapons. Depending on the needs, specifics of combat and the tasks at hand, a variety of YPR-765 variants can be combined. The armoured vehicle can accommodate up to 7 paratroopers in full combat gear and three crew members. It has an aluminium body and a metal bumper. It can accelerate up to 61 km/h. Improvised Mechanical Grenades Produced in the Philippines During February, March and April 2024, Philippine security forces raided camps of groups allied with the New People’s Army, in Abra Province, in the north of the country. During the raids, various equipment was seized, including weapons, small arms ammunition, IEDs, rifle grenades, standard and improvised hand grenades, communications and observation devices, various electric detonators, and batteries. Some of the seized items were indicative of workshops for the production of improvised hand grenades. These included molds and parts of rotating striker fuzes and safety pins for grenades. Additionally, grenades resembling the M26 model with similar mechanisms were seized. The appearance of these items marks a change of direction from what has been hitherto known about improvised NPA ammunition – IEDs documented to date were mostly cased in PVC pipes. ? The team at Goodfish Powell and Harber, have been moulding the screening striker lever for the same customer for over 10 years. This component plays a crucial role in initiating the smoke-producing reaction within the grenade. When the lever is released or pulled, it activates the mechanism inside the grenade, igniting the smoke-producing substances. This action generates smoke, serving the intended purpose of obscuring visibility or creating a smokescreen for tactical purposes. #Sweden will transfer all its #Pansarbandvagn 302 armored personnel carriers to Ukraine. The Swedish government?said?that the armored vehicles would be included in the 16th defense aid package. The Ukrainian military is currently forming a number of new brigades and therefore needs additional armored vehicles. “Sweden will transfer the entire Swedish fleet of Pansarbandvagn 302 (Pbv 302) to support the formation of new brigades of the Ukrainian military,”?the government said. The Pbv 302 armored personnel carriers will be supplied with spare parts, maintenance equipment, and ammunition. The Swedish government noted that the donation temporarily decreases the country’s defense capability, so the Swedish Defense Ministry will purchase new armored vehicles. Sweden will also provide tanker trucks and resources to maintain the previously donated equipment. The Swedish Pansarbandvagn 302 tracked armored personnel carrier was developed by Haglund & S?ner in the 1960s. The military started using them in 1966, and a total of 644 vehicles were produced. By the standards of the 1960s, the Pbv 302 armored personnel carrier received extremely powerful armament in the form of a HS804 20mm automatic gun. The hull is welded from steel plates, with the side plates having a two-layer structure. The frontal plates can withstand a 20-mm shell hit. Sweden is also?donating an ASC 890?airborne surveillance and control aircraft to Ukraine.
