Women's college basketball is eclipsing the NBA and Major League Baseball -- and giving the NFL a run for its money. The April 5 Iowa-UConn game averaged 14.2 million viewers on ESPN, beating the previous record for a women's college basketball game (Iowa versus LSU) set 4 days ago. That game had more viewers than the NBA Finals, 2023 World Series, and even the NFL's Thursday Night Football. And bear in mind: women's basketball has been traditionally broadcast on ESPN, while men's games have enjoyed broader exposure on CBS. But women's college basketball has more stars -- notably Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, JuJu Watkins, and Paige Bueckers. Especially Caitlin Clark. She is bigger than Michael Jordan when he was in college. Will the Caitlin Clark effect hold after March Madness ends and she moves on to the WNBA? I think so. Maybe not right away -- after all, not everyone can be Caitlin Clark -- but over the long run, more women celebrities are filling the ranks of college basketball landing endorsement deals (thanks to NIL deals) and savvy use of social media. Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese each have more Instagram followers than the 15 men's Wooden Award (player of the year) finalists combined. The men's dominance of college basketball ratings has peaked with the ascendance of linear TV. Last Friday’s Iowa vs. UConn Final Four women’s basketball match was the most-watched basketball game EVER on ESPN, at any level. People filled the stadium just to watch team practices before the actual games. And these women set records during games throughout the tournament! Not only that, viewers have also been in awe of the panel of all Black women commentators over the past month. I have never seen so many people this excited to watch women’s games, and honestly I have never been as excited as I was this year. For the first time, I saw my parents make an effort to go to a USC (fight on) basketball game because they wanted to see JuJu Watkins play in person. More and more Americans are waking up to just how incredible women’s sports are, and how fun it is to watch them do what they do best. The talent, skill, ambition, and competitiveness have always been there. Investing in women’s sports is smart business and great entertainment. This is the result of years of building by women athletes and other advocates. The most-watched basketball game since 2019 was the 2024 NCAA Women's D1 Championship match on Sunday between Iowa and South Carolina with 18.7 million average viewers and about 24 million at its peak. Most-watched men's or women's. College or professional. Most-watched of any basketball game in the last 5 years ?? And in addition, this game had about 4 million more viewers than the men's championship on Monday, yet the TV rights to the women's game were 99% LESS than the men's ($6.5 million for women's and $873 million for the men's). That's some insane ROI for those who bet on women's sports. The argument that "no one watches women's sports" is ostensibly false. They've just been underfunded and underappreciated by those with the power to make it easily accessible for viewers. This shows the absolute power that social media can have over a movement - it can be argued that the popularity of women's sports over the last few years has been booming because of the icon status that athletes have gained through their social media platforms, Caitlin Clark being the most iconic athlete this year so far. I think this was a wake-up call for the broadcasters -- I can't wait to continue to watch women's sports on major platforms in the coming years and see this environment thrive. In fact, the Indiana Fever (who are expected to pick Clark in their no. 1 draft pick on Monday) are slated to have 36 out of their 40 games broadcast on national television this year - the highest in the WNBA this year, and up from just 22 last year. My one gripe with this is that the games will be broadcast on 5 different platforms, still making it a bit inaccessible for people who don't have all of these channels. "The NCAA women’s basketball tournament final Sunday drew more viewers than the men’s final for the first time in history, fueled in part by Iowa standout?Caitlin Clark’s?rise to superstardom?and marking a stunning moment for the sport. But that won’t be reflected in the money each side earned for TV rights: $6.5 million for the women’s tournament and $873 million for the men’s. The wide discrepancy raises the question of whether college athletics officials have failed to capitalize on a surge in popularity in the women’s game. A new deal that goes into effect next season will allocate some $65 million a year for the women’s game, a substantial jump but still a fraction of the men’s haul. Part of the disparity stems from the structure of the deals. While the men’s college-basketball tournament is sold as a stand-alone entity, the women’s is offered as part of a bundle that encompasses 40 sports championships, from volleyball to lacrosse. Sunday’s?women’s final?attracted 18.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen, almost four times what the women’s final drew just two years ago. The last basketball game to be watched by more people was the 2019 NCAA men’s final between Virginia and Texas Tech, which drew 19.6 million viewers. Monday’s NCAA?men’s final between Connecticut and Purduewas watched by 14.8 million. Because the women’s final aired on ABC—a broadcast network, which like ESPN is owned by Disney—it was available to a bigger pool of potential viewers than the men’s game, which was on?Warner Bros. Discovery’s TBS and required a cable-TV-like subscription. (Cable TV has lost more than a quarter of its subscribers over the past decade.) On the other hand, the men’s final was played in prime time Monday, while the women’s game aired on Sunday afternoon."

The University of Iowa vs. Louisiana State University showdown in the Elite 8 drew a stunning 12.3 million viewers on #ESPN marking it as the most-watched women’s college basketball game in history ?? To put this into perspective, Iowa-LSU's viewership surpassed several notable games: ? The Purdue-Tennessee men’s Elite 8 game on Sunday afternoon drew 10.4 million viewers on CBS. ?The Golden Globes broadcasted on CBS in January garnered 9.5 million viewers. ?The final round of the Masters last year on CBS attracted 12.1 million viewers. ?Four out of five games from the NBA Finals on ABC in 2023 (Nuggets-Heat) fell short in viewership. ?Every game of the 2023 World Series on Fox (Rangers-D-backs) was also surpassed in viewership. History made! This week’s women’s LSU-Iowa rematch averaged 12.3 million viewers (per Nielsen), making it the most-watched college basketball game ever to air on ESPN platforms. Like Lisa Valentino mentioned on stage at #CIMMEast today, it’s never been a more exciting time for women’s sports. This year’s March Madness tournament has shown us the future, and like men's sports it's driven by stars like Caitlin Clark, JuJu Watkins, and Paige Bueckers and brands like ESPN. The Elite 8 LSU-Iowa game was 22% more effective at driving ad engagement than last year's Championship match, underscoring the massive growth women's NCAA basketball and other women's sports have enjoyed over the last year. Five of the top ten #MarchMadness games by ad effectiveness are women’s so far this year – up from just two in 2023. The WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association)’s unprecedented growth continues as the league, which just tipped off its 28th season on May 14th, finished May with its highest attended opening month in 26 years and its most-watched start of season across networks like ABC, ESPN, and CBS. The league also saw remarkable viewership growth among diverse audiences, with a 60% year-over-year increase among people of color and substantial gains among Hispanic and Black fans, as well as a 124% increase in under-35 viewership. Curious about how each rookie has been performing on search and what WNBA fans, new and old, are looking for on Google, I was able to calculate that Caitlin Clark is dominating the search spotlight like no other rookie in the 2024 class (not surprising given how much media coverage she gets). On average, the volume of searches she receives on Google is about 7.74 times higher than her 2024 rookie peers Cameron Brink, Kamilla Cardoso, Rickea Jackson, and Angel Reese so far this season.
