Recap: Loneliness and Social Isolation:?Identifying, Understanding, and Addressing the Issue The Sarah Ralston Foundation, in partnership with experts from Penn Medicine, Penn’s Village, and St. Joseph’s University, hosted an engaging session at the PCA Annual Regional Conference on Aging. The discussion, titled "Loneliness and Social Isolation: Identifying, Understanding, and Addressing the Issue," brought together leaders in the field to explore how these challenges impact older adults and practical ways to address them. Nora Brier, PsyD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Penn Medicine, kicked off the session by presenting research on the behavioral and emotional impact of loneliness and social isolation. Dr. Brier explained how these issues not only affect mental health but also increase the risk of chronic physical conditions, including heart disease and dementia. She shared strategies for recognizing and mitigating loneliness in clinical settings, emphasizing the importance of proactive support. Jane Eleey, Executive Director of Penn’s Village, introduced the audience to the unique role of "villages" in fostering community connections for older adults. She highlighted the importance of volunteer-driven programs that offer transportation, companionship, and technology assistance, enabling seniors to age in place with dignity. Jane shared inspiring stories from Penn’s Village members, demonstrating the power of social connection in improving quality of life. Lynda Lemisch, OTD, OTR/L, Clinical Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy at St. Joseph’s University, concluded the presentation by focusing on how occupational therapy plays a critical role in combating isolation. Dr. Lemisch shared practical interventions, from home modifications to creative arts programming, that help older adults remain engaged in their daily lives. She stressed the importance of understanding individual goals to create meaningful, person-centered interventions. The session wrapped up with a lively discussion, with participants sharing their experiences and ideas for future collaboration. The Sarah Ralston Foundation is grateful to PCA for the opportunity to facilitate this important conversation and looks forward to continued efforts in addressing loneliness and social isolation among older adults. Looking back at last week’s #WorldMentalHealthDay, our team remains more committed than ever to generating health economic evidence that supports decision-makers in making informed investments in #child and #adolescent #mentalhealth. This past spring, some of our team members held a symposium at the Karolinska Institutet – UNICEF Sweden Joint Conference on Global Child and Adolescent Mental Health: "Bold Ideas for Brighter Futures". ?? Our symposium was titled: "Generating Health Economic Evidence for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Promotion and Prevention: Opportunities and Challenges." ?? The symposium brought together three studies within the economics of child and adolescent mental health, each offering insights into the health economic landscape and addressing methodological opportunities and challenges in conducting such studies. ? Key takeaways from our discussions with the audience included: ?? Collaborations and partnerships with decision-makers: Early involvement of decision-makers in the research process is crucial. ???????? Patient and public involvement: Adopting a socio-ecological approach by involving children, families, and communities in the evidence-building process. ?? Better data for better decisions: Highlighting the need for comprehensive data to support health economic evaluations. ?? Implementation considerations: Factoring in the practicalities of implementing evidence in real-world settings. The urgency to address child and adolescent mental health issues is greater than ever, and evidence-based strategies are essential. Our work contributes to the growing body of health economic evidence in this field. Thanks to Filipa Sampaio for chairing the symposium, and Inna Feldman, Ingyin Moe and Patricio Martínez de Alva Coria for presenting. And thanks to our colleagues at CHAP - Child Health and Parenting. Want to learn more about our projects in child and adolescent mental health? The WHO Country Office in Poland and Polish Ministry of Health have attended a two-day #MentalHealth forum in Warsaw where policymakers have come together to discuss ways to improve mental health services and advance ongoing reforms. The forum will serve as a launchpad for the development and implementation of a comprehensive Intersectoral Roadmap for National Mental Health. It includes policymakers from the health, education, and justice sectors, parliament members, health professionals, academics, civil society organisations and advocacy groups, as well as people with lived experience and their families. In 2018, Poland embarked on mental health reforms, introducing a pilot project for Community Mental Health Centres to help transition from inpatient to community-based care, covering 54% of the adult population with community mental health services. The forum kicked off with an opening speech from Dr Wojciech Konieczny, Secretary of State for the Polish Ministry of Health, followed by Dr Nino Berdzuli, World Health Organization Representative to Poland. The opening was followed by an intersectoral panel discussion on policy priorities by Dr Wojciech Konieczny, Secretary of State for the Polish Ministry of Health, Izabela Zietka, Undersecretary of State for the Ministry of National Education, Member of Parliament Marta Golbik and Jolanta Zagajewska, Deputy Director, Department of Enforcement, moderated by Dr Nino Berdzuli. The government of Poland recognises that for truly transformational change to occur, agencies and ministries need to adopt a joined-up approach connecting policy priorities across various sectors so that they can benefit the whole of society. We are particularly glad to see the determination of Polish experts: ? to build resilience for good mental health for all young people and prevent mental health problems in schools ? to shape further the Polish model of care that will enable children, adolescents and adults with mental health issues access to comprehensive and well-coordinated care and best achieve their recovery goals ? to improve and innovate on funding mechanisms for mental health care Nino Berdzuli Ledia Lazeri Jason Maurer Yannish Naik Ionela Petrea Sophie Scott

I've been writing for years about internet communities, subcultures, and the dynamics that shape communities. Recently I launched a new project called Care Culture which is looking at how these dynamics play out in the health and wellness space. My latest post is about loneliness and the rather mis-named "loneliness epidemic." It's important to understand the different needs, incentives, and social institutions that this term really points to. https://lnkd.in/eBzS-CVj

Just read The Lancet’s call for a complex systems approach in public health. Issues like obesity and health inequality aren’t isolated problems but outcomes of interconnected systems—social, economic, and environmental factors included. So let's move beyond linear methods to embrace complex, multi-layered strategies to open up new pathways for real-world solutions, such as agent-based modeling and natural experiments, that can capture the nuances of public health interventions. This approach reminds me of the importance of collaboration across sectors to create sustainable impact. Stakeholder engagement from beginning to end is key. We should align our work with this holistic vision, where lasting change is rooted in understanding and navigating the full web of factors that shape public health outcomes. https://lnkd.in/dhp2qrwv

In today's world, where access to accurate health information can be a game-changer, it's crucial that we come together to uplift and educate our communities. My journey in community health awareness has shown me that knowledge truly is power. Whether it's breaking the stigma around mental health, promoting healthy habits among the youth, or ensuring that everyone has access to essential medical services, our collective efforts make a difference. Today, as I reflect on the impactful health sessions we've conducted—whether it's in schools or out in the field during community outreaches—I am reminded of the incredible resilience and strength within our communities. From educating young girls about menstrual health to offering medical services to underserved populations, every initiative is a step toward a healthier, more informed future. Health isn't just about the absence of illness; it's about fostering a sense of well-being, dignity, and empowerment in every individual. As we continue this journey, let's remember that we all have a role to play. Together, we can conquer stigma, raise awareness, and build healthier, stronger communities. Here's to continuing the work, making every conversation count, and ensuring that no one is left behind. Let's keep pushing forward, one health talk, one outreach, and one person at a time. ????

Discover the very first Canadian guidelines on social isolation and loneliness! These guidelines were developed for health care and social service professionals. The purpose of these guidelines is to empower and support clinicians in their work with older adults who may be at risk of or already experiencing the health impacts of social isolation and loneliness. These guidelines will help providers recognize, assess and treat isolation and loneliness among older adults. Canadian Coalition for Seniors' Mental Health│Coalition canadienne pour la santé mentale des a?nés literature review indicates that these clinical guidelines are also the first of their kind to be developed internationally. https://lnkd.in/gWjXmfsg #albertaseniors #healthyagingalberta #isolation #loneliness
