Happy September! Yes, there's a new edition of The Land Collective Beyond the Skyline newsletter out today - this time I'm talking about the industry's current approach to traditional career education. I think it's time to switch it up. I've always been more of a do-er. I like to crack on with things and try them out for myself, as its how I learn best. For those who are like me, career education can feel like a bit of a drag until you get your hands on something to do. What is the ROI on university career fairs and one-off career talks? Not just for the company but for the young person attending or listening? Let's create memorable experiences for them to engage, especially considering just how vocational a lot of the built environment sector is anyway! ___ ?? My newsletter is aimed at employers, those who are invested in social impact across the real estate sector and career leaders at schools. Fortnightly on Fridays! -> https://lnkd.in/ePC_ajmH

Truly curious: What percentage of college students actually attend career fairs? And if it's a low percentage, which is likely the case, why is there so much emphasis on something that students aren't prioritizing? Career fairs can't be scaled to reach the majority of learners, and at the end of the day, they just reinforce a handful of big-name companies that can afford to send reps around the country to reach a small number of students. Actual outcomes matter. What is your institution doing to enhance the career outcomes of your students? Because that's the promise of higher education. A high cost to the student but a huge gain when it comes to career outcomes and employability. Otherwise, and this is sadly true for millions of learners, they have a high amount of debt, and their career prospects are nowhere near what they should or could be. This is where the conversation around skills is vital. Now is the time for a critical mass of career services conversations, research, and thought leadership in this space. The value of higher education is easy to see, but it has to be verified and shareable in ways that lead to tangible career outcomes.

Last week I had the privilege to speak to students of JKUAT University during their Career Fair Day 6th November 2024.?The session covered essential aspects of career planning and self-awareness, especially in the context of preparing for the gig economy, which requires adaptability and forward-thinking. Here’s a reflection on the key takeaways from my talk, which could further reinforce the importance of career planning: Emphasized the importance of self-awareness regarding personal goals, values, skills, and interests. - Noted that many students change their majors’ multiple times during college, ? Highlighted influences on career choices, including social media, family, friends, and personal interactions. ? Outlined stages in career development: identifying interests, exploring careers, setting goals, and celebrating successes.?? Recommended taking personality and interest tests for self-discovery. ? Identified barriers to career planning: negative self-image, attitudes, victim mentality, indecisiveness, and psychological challenges. ? Discussed consequences of poor planning, such as switching majors, feeling trapped, dropping out, transferring, extending study duration, and financial strain. ? Addressed constraints like financial issues, resistance from support systems, and time management. ? Reinforced that students are ultimately responsible for their career decisions and the impact on their future lifestyle, so taking responsibility for their choices while remaining open to growth and change is crucial for building a sustainable and fulfilling career in the gig economy. ?? ????

Do College Career Fairs Really Help Recruit Quality Interns? Answers: https://lnkd.in/g-tvNRvf #CareerFairs #InternRecruitment #Hospitality Hey everyone! ?? So, here’s the dilemma we’re facing at my company: We’re thinking about hitting up some college career fairs to recruit interns for next summer, but I’m not sure if it’s really worth the effort. Here’s the deal: Past Experiences: Some managers swear by these events, saying they've had decently successful hires in the past. But realistically, they usually walk away with only 20-25 resumes and often end up hiring just one intern a year from those fairs. ?? Visibility Argument: Their reasoning is that attending these fairs boosts our visibility with students, which could lead to more online applications later. Budget Concerns: Our finance director is pushing back big time on the travel and hotel costs since interns rarely become year-round employees. And let’s be real, in our seasonal hospitality business, that’s not really our main goal. Cost vs. Benefit: While the cost of attending might seem low comparatively, we’re under pressure from the board to keep expenses in check this year. So, I’m curio...
