Through We Rise Together: For an Equitable & Just Recovery, we are learning about the outsized impact grocery stores have on neighborhood economies. We Rise Together, a collaborative of 160 funders led by The Chicago Community Trust, has supported some 40 real estate developments in long-disinvested communities since 2021. As these projects open, we’re learning about the impact of these places through a robust evaluation, another benefit of a collaborative funding model. With our evaluation partner Mastercard Data Services, we are seeing that grocers produce immediate and measurable impacts on total traffic to an area when they open and close. Closing a larger grocery store produces a further reaching effect than opening a smaller local grocery store. As more projects open their doors, we will continue to share what we’re learning through our ongoing evaluation. #Chicago #Philanthropy #WeRiseWednesdays

The violence, racism and hate on display in Bristol this weekend was horrifying and unacceptable. These actions have no place in our city. ? The vast majority of Bristolians value community, diversity and equality. But we must do much more to tackle the deep inequities in which hatred, resentment and division fester. ? We believe tackling food insecurity is one of the essential solutions. There are so many projects in our city that are doing vital work towards food justice. They are helping people at the sharpest end of food insecurity with good food that is culturally appropriate, accessible and affordable to all who need it. This nourishes bodies and nourishes our humanity. ? Community organisations need our support now more than ever. That’s why we do the work we do, and that’s why we will continue, working with all partners and communities to help make Bristol a city of food justice. ? Today Ritter Center launches Ask The Expert, a series where we seek insights from our staff on relevant community news. Client Services Receptionist Pantry Facility Mayte De los Reyes weighs in about the exciting news of the first free grocery store to open in SF: District 10 Community Market. “Helping the most vulnerable populations by offering equitable access to fresh and healthy food, this new market represents a significant evolution of food pantries, transitioning to a market-style model. Ritter Center’s pantry adopts a similar model to the community market but on a smaller scale, allowing clients to select their own food." Mayte continues, "This approach benefits individuals with dietary restrictions, such as diabetes, and also reduces food waste. Benefits such as Cal-Fresh have decreased, particularly for seniors relying solely on retirement income. This includes seniors without immigration status who do not qualify for Cal-Fresh or SNAP, newcomer families with pending immigration status, and unhoused clients who lack kitchen facilities. If you didn't know I am letting you in on the secret. The must not miss event of VenueConnect is the DILC Celebration for a Cause. It's an opportunity to spend time with the best in the industry for a great cause. There is laughter, dancing, drinks, and stories you would only believe if you attended. Many of you may not know but one of the responsibilities of the DILC committee is to provide over $20K in scholarships to IAVM educational opportunities to individuals in underrepresented populations. The majority of the funds raised for these scholarships are done with dollars we raise during this annual event. Since 2020 the donations have started to become smaller and smaller. How might?unlocking the expertise, creativity, and motivation of supermarket employees transform food donation? How can worker-engaged approaches further benefit retailers and employees? To address these questions, RECIPES researchers from?Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health,?Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, &?Maryland Institute College of Art Center for Creative Impact (formerly the Center for Social Design)?convened a cohort of 10 frontline employees from four Albertsons Companies’ grocery retail stores in the Mid-Atlantic area (known as "Fresh Rescue Champions"?or "Champions")?to co-design a set of strategies to improve the food donation?program. The project is rooted in the idea that when given the opportunity to think closely about needs, frontline workers can utilize their lived experience and expertise to develop strategies?that both differ and complement those developed by others.
