According to Scholar Media Africa, most PhDs graduating are in their 50s and 60s with a significant drop-out rate due to problems of supervision with professors and doctors giving feedback to students at their own discretion. It all comes down to one arguement; your Supervisor (PI) has a huge influence on how fast you advance. Hopefully, we'll get to change this narrative once we get there. Very soon. It doesn't have to be that hard! I am one of the individuals who believe that we have (potentially) some of the best intitutions globally. We should also be in a position to attract foreign researchers back home. We can be equally competitive. Article by: Prof. Maurice Amutabi Link: https://lnkd.in/dXs4r3zw

Such an important topic Sandra Lapointe. I wish I could be in Toronto to learn from others and share views. My modest oversimplified suggestion: As part of their academic path, provide the 80% (PhDs that know won't go into academia) with 20% of non-academic competencies that will be useful in their future roles. Non-academic competencies could be viewed as a mix of knowledge mobilisation, experiential learning, valorization/transfer, entrepreneurship and other impact-focused activities. Evaluate accordingly. Looking forward to learn about the result of the discussions! Coryell
Talent and Partnerships for Inclusive and Collaborative Innovation. Professor of Philosophy, Director of The/La Collaborative and Convener of the Canadian Forum for Social Innovation
On average, fewer than 20% of PhD holders work in academia: they become part of innovation ecosystems in the social, public and industrial sectors. As such, they should be equipped to leverage their skills to drive Canadian prosperity. ? Graduate education strategy is an important dimension of innovation policy. In a context where social and human research are increasingly seen to be as important as the development of enabling technologies to address societal and global challenges, we need to rethink the competencies we associate with highly qualified talent. ? Join the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and The/La Collaborative at the next annual meeting of the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) for a consultative and deliberative workshop to shape the vision for Canada’s Graduate Education Strategy. Join us to: ↗ Take ownership of proposed recommendations and set priorities ↗ Reflect on the mechanisms necessary to promote concerted action ↗ Identify key stakeholders to rally around an emerging consensus ↗ Identify audiences for a statement and next steps A consensus statement emerging from this consultation will inform the next steps of a national campaign in partnership with Evidence for Democracy. This special event will take place Wednesday October 30, 1:30-5pm in Toronto (downtown) and is free. Sustainability is not just a buzzword; it is the focus even at the higher education level. Hence, this collaboration with my colleagues on fostering a sustainable approach to doctoral studies. It was our first poster presentation, and it was a learning curve for us too. Looking forward to more opportunities for collaborations for sustainability. #sustainability #lifelonglearning #sdgs
I am thankful for this oppurtunity to collaborate with fellow International PhD candidates Karizza Bravo-Sotelo Shafinur Nahar Silas Emovwodo about fostering a sustainable approach to doctoral studies. We got to present this at the International Conference organised by C3L, UBD.

Reposting this excellent summary of the “3 don’ts” for achieving policy impact with research. These points highlight the importance of aligning your expertise with real-world needs while maintaining academic rigor. I see parallels between these lessons and the broader discourse on impact-oriented research and knowledge valorisation. I’d also suggest adding a fourth piece of advice: 4?? Don’t work in isolation: engage in co-creation from the start. Collaborating with stakeholders—whether policymakers, communities, or industry—during the research design phase enhances the relevance and application of your work. The recent AWTI report, Natural Connections: Embed Social Sciences and Humanities Research in Innovation, reinforces this point, highlighting how social sciences and humanities (SSH) are critical in addressing complex challenges. By integrating SSH perspectives, we ensure that innovations—be they technological, policy, or societal—are ethical, inclusive, and sustainable. While fundamental research remains vital for advancing knowledge and addressing long-term challenges, we are also seeing an increasing emphasis on: ? Societal relevance: Connecting research to pressing real-world questions. ? Knowledge valorisation: Creating pathways for insights to generate tangible benefits. ? Interdisciplinary collaboration: Building trust and communication pathways to integrate research into decision-making processes effectively. What strategies have you found most effective in engaging stakeholders from the outset and driving impact? #humanitiesimpact Universiteit Utrecht - Faculteit Geesteswetenschappen
What are the 3 don'ts if you would like to make policy impact with your research ? 1?? Don't take the moral?high ground: use utilitarian arguments instead (why is your advice beneficial?); 2?? Don't propose your policy recommendations without dry-run: test them informally with trusted officials (can it fly?); 3?? Don't think policy makers & politicians listen in a similar way to your story: adapt your framing to their uptake drivers without compromising on your academic integrity (what makes them tick?) These were my takeaways of the 50th anniversary of the EADI European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes celebrations at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam last Friday. Question: What are other don'ts for researcher wishing to make a difference?
