Our hearts and thoughts are with the families and communities in Los Angeles County affected by these tragic fires this week that continue to grow. We are also inspired by the resilience and dedication of those first responders from around the country working tirelessly to protect lives, homes, and landscapes. These urban fires and fires in the “wild urban interface” highlight the urgent need to adapt communities and provide effective and safe responses. While these fires are in many ways different than the wildfires that have burned millions of acres of forests and rural communities in the West just this last year, they do highlight the need for our society to deepen our understanding of the complexity of today’s wildfires and how we can take action, including in how we manage our forests, to create more resilient communities and landscapes. This has been and will continue to be a priority for our programming, but for now, our focus is on the safety of these communities. #LAwildfires #wildfireimpactseveryone

REASONS TO BID: FOR COMMUNITY ???? Bid in our 2024 Auction at astauction.org What do people and wild salmon have in common? We both need cold, clean water. By supporting our work to provide lasting solutions for wild Atlantic salmon, you can help us deliver the resilient, biodiverse environments that people also need in order to thrive in the future, whether that's for work, play or for our health and happiness. Community engagement and support always sits at the centre of our catchment restoration partnerships. Whether you're an angler or other water user, a riverside resident or occasional visitor, we all rely on cold, clean water and watersheds with: ? Water free from point source and diffuse pollution. ?? Free access within river systems for migratory fish and other species. ??? Natural flows where water can move freely both downstream, and across natural flood plains and riverside zones. ?? Resilience to floods and droughts. ?? Biodiverse, complex and wide riverside zones. Every bid in this year's auction counts and helps us to continue on our mission to restore wild Atlantic salmon and their environment. #coldcleanwater #wildsalmonfirst

What can we learn from Wildfires? The recent LA wildfires have devastated communities and nature, but what causes these rolling inferno's, and what role do they play in the local eco-systems? We revisited a video of ours from 2020, and this is what we found. ?? The fatal Palisades and Eaton Wildfires have devastated LA communities, burning across more than 14,000 acres and destroying thousands of buildings. ?? Urban Planning for expansions into high fire-risk zones means that more houses are in the way of these fires, and firefighting resources need to be further spread-out. ?? Fire has always been a natural part of Californian wildlife, where smaller fires allow seeds that require high temperatures to open up and embed themselves in carbon-rich soil. Check out the full video on the Californian Wildfires from 2020, and learn how humanities relationship to fire might need to change: https://lnkd.in/dUbdXq_4

Last week, during my visit to Los Angeles, I saw firsthand the devastation caused by the wildfires in the Palisades and Altadena. What stood out most wasn’t just the damage but the overwhelming gathering of community, with mobilization support offering compassion and patience. I was reminded of this again on my flight back to Austin when I read "The View From Here". The article highlights the challenges ahead for Los Angeles, but also the opportunity to rebuild with resilience and care. https://lnkd.in/g2kbbkNq At CORE GROUP, these values resonate deeply. Restoration is about more than rebuilding structures—it’s about listening to the needs of communities, exercising patience in the face of complex challenges, and working toward a future that prioritizes sustainability and preparedness. We’re arming our teams and members with the latest updates in safety and preparedness, ensuring that when the time comes to rebuild, we do so thoughtfully and sustainably. To support any restorers responding to the fires, our VP of Operations, Jason Gilstrap, has created an open-source safety and preparedness document that will be updated in real-time and available to everyone. ?? ?? Texas is a vital stop for birds! Each spring, about 1 in 3 migrating birds and 1 in 4 in the fall pass through our state—nearly two billion birds in total! Many North American birds migrate at night, but city lights can confuse and disorient them, leading to dangerous collisions with buildings. Sadly, 100 million to 1 billion birds die each year due to these structures. That’s why we need Lights Out, Texas!—a campaign dedicated to educating and taking action to protect our migratory birds. ? HOW TO PARTICIPATE: ? Building owners, businesses, and homeowners can help by turning off non-essential nighttime lighting from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Want to learn more about the Lights Out, Texas! initiative?
