Please read below!
Yesterday, the Greater Chicagoland Area Food Banks - Northern Illinois Food Bank, Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana - released a "Greater Chicagoland Hunger Report" to help raise awareness about the rise of food insecurity, the need for more community support and resources for families. The rise in food insecurity is not an urban, rural or suburban issue. We are seeing it across the board at all three Food Banks so we're joining together to ensure families have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. ?? Hunger is complicated, and there are a lot of factors we have to consider to end it. There's no one "right" answer- success will come from collaboration by diverse individuals and communities ready to innovate, take risks, and find new ways to support our neighbors. This week’s spotlight shines a light on some of VFR’s hub-and-spoke partners:?South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH) Food Hub,?Heart Tattoo Society, DTES Distribution Hub, and?CityReach Care Society. ? The hub-and-spoke model provides a means of food distribution that relies on a central location (the hub where the food is organized) and several spoke locations that are sites for food distribution to clients in the neighbourhood. ? VFR’s volunteers help with the delivery of food from the hub to peripheral spoke locations, which supports nonprofit partners and helps to increase food access across the city. ? Here’s a sneak peek outling how VFR’s volunteers support the South Vancouver Community Food Hub: ? “VFR Food Rescue Heroes who support our program – huge shout-out to regular volunteers like Doug, Anna, and Kulwant! – are so crucial to helping us ensure that food reaches neighbours who need it the most. ? By supporting the transportation side of our hub-and-spoke model, you are allowing SVNH and our partners to be more efficient, save money (as it reduces the need for trucks and drivers), and have more time to connect people to services beyond food, like employment programs, childcare and government benefits. ? Most importantly, you are helping community members access food, connection, and resources closer to home. ? This gives people more breathing room, which is huge when they are experiencing multiple barriers, and frees them up to spend more time with their loved ones, get back on their own feet, and give back to the community.” Click the link to read the full article!

I like this commentary
Food Justice Advocate | Food Pantry Consultant | Bringing justice and dignity to the fight to end hunger
When you really think about it, food banking is all about the giver. We've created institutions to store food so that we can distribute it in ways we find appropriate. We've established a system that depends upon donations by corporations- who only participate for the tax breaks and financial benefits it brings (they can't argue they do it out of the kindness of their hearts until they start paying all their staff a living wage.) Partner agencies develop programming around the interests and availability of volunteers rather than clients. I'm a food banker, and I love this work. I also see the irony of advocating against my own industry. But after fifty years of fighting hunger with this model, it should be easy to see that this is not the right answer. Given that we must work with the resources available, it is essential that emergency food assistance programs shift our perspectives. It's time to recognize and uplift those with lived experience of hunger by ensuring that we build programs that meet their needs, even when they feel awkward or uncomfortable or don't align with what society has taught us about hunger. There is incredible energy in this movement right now, with room for innovation, growth, and change, and I'm digging into it at www.whodeservestoeat.com. Subscribe so you never miss a post!

Forty years ago, when Foodgrains Bank was founded, food assistance meant shipping Canadian grain worldwide. Today, we often prioritize purchasing food locally in the countries where we work, contributing to their local economies. Yet, in-kind assistance still involves the delivery of actual food items. In recent years, much of our programming has seen an even bigger shift: the adoption of cash and voucher assistance. But why cash? Read our latest article by Stefan Epp-Koop, humanitarian and nexus program senior manager, to learn more about how Foodgrains Bank uses cash to #endhunger ?? https://lnkd.in/eDTBQjn5

Why did I think nearly two years ago that financial inclusion support belonged in foodbanks? Because the sheer volume of people accessing them, (3 million vouchers distributed in the last year), meant that not only do we share a mission to reduce the need for foodbanks, but it meant that really simply, we knew people would be there. Everything Your Own Place CIC does starts with values, relationships, quality, impact and trust. So the decision to meet people where they are already engaging with services: in community centres, warm spaces, and foodbanks and social supermarkets makes total sense. We know that here, in foodbanks, people are more likely to engage further with us, then with other services.? Sometimes it just isn't their landlord they want to speak to. We create safe, non-judgemental spaces to be open and have financial coaching conversations as a prequel to more in depth support, confidence building and ultimately handing over the batten - because it's their life. #foodbanks #foodhubs #partnerships #thetrusselltrust #behaviours #financialinclusion #resilience #money #prevention #costofliving #casestudy

?? Let's Shine a Light on Corporate Kindness ?? I had the privilege of witnessing something truly heartwarming yesterday. During my trip to Edmonton this week, I stopped by the Brewery District Shoppers Drug Mart. While waiting in line, I saw two homeless men approach another cashier. Unsure of what would happen next, I watched as the cashier greeted them with genuine smiles, offering each of them bottles of water and asking if they'd like "their snacks." To my surprise, she had a basket full of goodies tucked away under her till, a practice initiated by their manager to support those in need in the downtown core. As I left the store, I saw the men unpacking their "snack bags" with gratitude, which included a bagel and a bottle of Boost. Later that evening, I visited Cobbs Bakery for a fresh loaf of bread but arrived just after closing time. However, I witnessed something equally inspiring – the staff loading unsold baked goods into a van. When I inquired, they explained that they donate all unsold products to local food insecurity organizations every single night. In a world often filled with negative news, it's essential to highlight acts of kindness. If you've witnessed or experienced similar instances of corporate caring, I encourage you to share them below and tag the unsung heroes making a positive impact in our communities and beyond. Let's spread the positivity together! ???? #KindnessMatters #CorporateKindness #SpreadKindness #ActsOfKindness #CommunityImpact #PayItForward #PositivityInAction #MakingADifference #GoodDeeds #PositiveImpact #SocialGood #BeTheChange #KindnessInspires #GivingBack #HelpingHands
