The Global Burden of Parkinson's Disease: A Growing Challenge Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the fastest-growing neurological disorders worldwide, affecting over 8.5 million people globally. The combined costs associated with PD in the U.S. alone reach an estimated $52 billion annually, considering both direct medical costs and indirect factors like lost income and caregiving expenses: https://lnkd.in/ecUUbGsj ?? As we delve deeper into the genetic and environmental risk factors, including GBA1 mutations, the future of PD care lies in precision medicine. These insights are critical for developing targeted therapies that offer better outcomes for patients. Agyany is committed to advancing patient-centric therapies, particularly for individuals with GBA1-associated Parkinson's. Our focus on breakthrough small molecule therapies is at the core of our mission to transform how Parkinson’s disease is treated. https://lnkd.in/dkWcAbgD Prof Dr Arndt Rolfs, Ari ZIMRAN, Doreen Niemann, RCV-biotech, Tahar Ashfaq, Noel M. #InternationalGaucherDay #GaucherDisease #ParkinsonsDisease #GeneticResearch #HealthcareInnovation #Agyany #FutureOfMedicine #RareButNotAlone #PatientCare #ParkinsonsAwareness #GBA1 #PrecisionMedicine #GaucherResearch #Sidransky

Today is World Parkinson's Disease Day! Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions worldwide. In the disease, a protein called alpha-synuclein misfolds and clumps together. Those clumps then damage dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain, which leads to the typical Parkinson’s symptoms. Current treatments, primarily medications that replace dopamine, often have side effects and lose effectiveness over time. In light of this, we want to share last week's news from a groundbreaking clinical study, a collaborative effort by UZ Gent, Universiteit Gent, and VIB. This study has brought hope by revealing promising results from an innovative approach to treating Parkinson's disease: stool transplants. ?? More research is needed, but it offers a potentially safe, effective, and cost-effective way to improve symptoms and quality of life for millions of people with Parkinson's disease worldwide. Mitochondria are responsible for producing energy in cells. When they don't work correctly, it can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction, which can cause diseases in children. Since the brain and liver require high energy, they are particularly susceptible to these diseases. We plan to model this condition in the lab to find new treatments. ?? Melatonin and Parkinson's Disease: A Mystery Unfolds! Just read an intriguing article shedding light on the connection between melatonin, a neuroprotective hormone, and Parkinson's Disease (PD). Did you know that melatonin levels are significantly lowered in PD patients? The reason behind this blunted melatonin rhythm is a complex puzzle involving reduced light exposure, impaired retinal transmission, and degeneration of the circadian system. All these lead to extreme daytime sleepiness and other complications. What's fascinating is that this dysregulation might serve as a potential biomarker for PD severity. Understanding the root causes through further research could open new doors for treatment and early diagnosis. The quest for answers continues! ?????♂? New treatment options are expected to add decades to the lives of people with cystic fibrosis (CF), but those living with this genetic disease still must deal with burdensome issues like pain, fatigue and many other distressing symptoms. Now, a new five-year, $3.1 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will help Emory researchers undertake a novel study combining biological, social, and clinical research methods to better understand the underlying processes of these symptoms – and identify opportunities to improve quality of life. ??
