Today, Norman Foster, Dava Newman, Xavier De Kestelier, and Marc Guberman, AIA spoke about Space architecture and the benefits which this creative endeavour might, and will, offers to everyone of us here on Earth. Highlights for me: 1. Xavier De Kestelier was showing self-assembling building blocks for the outer shelfs of Moon/Mars habitats. I love that idea, ingenious, simple, and fun. Throwing tetrapods with a robotic arm. It is an idea from the pristine minds of kids unconstrained by the boring layers of knowledge. I would just add: Shake the tetrapods down using the inflatable support. They will lock together better :) 2. Marc Guberman, AIA was, rightly, pointing out that the Overview effect 2.0 is coming but leaving the anwer to the question "When?" open. In my view, the simple fact that this exiting event took place and that it has drawn in a crowd attests that the Overview effect 2.0 is already here.

One of our team members, Stephen Hunter, recently wrote an article for Building Science Perspective on the big impact that can be achieved by improving small thermal weak spots in the building enclosures. ? Using a program developed at Sense Engineering to analyze and visualize building enclosure thermal transmittance, he demonstrated how we were able to achieve a 13.5% reduction in thermal transmittance in a building enclosure renovation design by incorporating modest improvements to the thermal weak spots. ? When it comes to enhancing the thermal performance of our building enclosures, the thermal weak spots truly represent the low-hanging fruit. Identifying and improving these weak spots in a targeted manner—whether in new construction or during renovations—can have a substantial impact on thermal performance without breaking the bank. ? This summer, our CEO had the privilege of attending the 26th Annual Building Science Symposium in Westford, MA. This is a pivotal event for those dedicated to advancing sustainable building practices. The conference covered a wide array of critical topics, from the implications of mold litigation and facade failure to the integration of AI in building performance analysis, as well as the latest developments in PHIUS strategies and Deep Energy Retrofits. One standout presentation came from @JulieKlump, who shared insights on implementing Deep Energy Retrofits to improve building efficiency in the low-income housing sector, an increasingly important focus as we aim to reduce operational carbon in existing buildings. Learning alongside industry leaders like Marc Rosenbaum, Kent Browning, Foster Lyons, and Steve Baczek, it became clear that the lessons we've gained over the last few decades must now guide the future of building science. "My biggest takeaway from the symposium is that as professionals, we bear the responsibility of not only implementing best practices but also actively educating the broader industry.
