For the first time ever, the state of Idaho approves its first solar farm on state land! The state has voted to lease 11,000 acres of land to PacifiCorp for the farm. Once finished, it will have more than 300 megawatts of combined wind, solar, and storage nameplate capacity. Idaho currently gets around 17% of its power through wind farms, a stat which is likely to majorly increase with the new approved solar farm (with more likely to follow). Many other renewable sources are also making great progress in the state & across the entire US! Recent projections from the EIA estimate that the new solar projects coming online this year will increase solar power generation by 75% in 2025. With this rapid adoption of solar energy, the EIA also projects that by 2025, solar will surpass hydroelectricity for the first time ever. Exciting times for renewable energy! "In 2023, solar PV alone accounted for three-quarters of renewable capacity additions worldwide Renewable power capacity additions will continue to increase in the next five years, with solar PV and wind accounting for a record 96% of it because their generation costs are lower than for both fossil and non-fossil alternatives in most countries and policies continue to support them. Solar PV and wind additions are forecast to more than double by 2028 compared with 2022, continuously breaking records over the forecast period to reach almost 710 GW."

This is an interesting report on the rural land used in utility-scale solar and wind installations over an 11 year period. These maps do give an idea of which states have positive policies. These two technologies have differences in generation per area of land use. It is good to see it presented in different ways.
A recent report from USDA contains a wealth of information about the impact of renewable energy generation on the landscape of rural areas. USDA estimates that 336,000 acres of land is currently being used for utility-scale solar and wind installations across the country, and a majority of those acres were categorized as cropland or pasture / rangeland prior to development. However, the amount of acreage impacted is miniscule compared to the almost 900 million acres of land in farms across the country. Other notable data points from the report: - As of 2020, 74% of utility-scale solar installations in the United States were in rural areas. For wind turbines the percentage is 99.8%. -There were 64,985 wind turbines in rural areas in 2020 – an increase of more than 500% from 2006. - The “footprint” of solar in terms of impact on land is much heavier than wind. A solar installation requires 7.5 acres per MW vs. 0.74 acres per MW for wind turbines. Link to report: https://bit.ly/3RBGhrf

Wyoming ranks 50th in the United States for installed solar energy. The state was projected to reach 43rd place by adding an expected total capacity of 685 MW over the next five years. However, the approval of the Cowboy Solar Project, will singly-handedly surpass that capacity expectation. The project's 771 MW of solar and 268 MW of battery energy storage is estimated to be enough to serve 771,000 homes - more than three times the number of homes in Wyoming. https://bit.ly/4bGkeaG #Solar #CowboySolarProject #renewableenergy pv magazine USA
