Balancing a career with meaningful community engagement isn’t easy, but the rewards are immense. Outside my professional responsibilities, I’m deeply committed to public initiatives in historic preservation, politics, and transportation advocacy—causes that inspire me and create lasting, tangible impact in our communities. Managing these commitments alongside my work has taught me invaluable lessons about purpose and perspective. Community engagement demands strategic thinking, resilience, and a long-term outlook—skills that are equally vital in the workplace. My experience in transportation and historic preservation advocacy has sharpened my ability to see the bigger picture, while my professional background enables me to address community issues with a structured, solutions-oriented approach. Each side of this balance enriches the other. Community initiatives provide my work with renewed purpose, while my professional role grounds my approach to local issues in practicality. One of the foundational principles of organizing is to organize yourself out of a job. In practice this looks like 3 things: 1) Hiring, expanding, and supporting the next generation of organizers to take up the mantle! So we're hiring for organizers across multiple issue areas, see here and share: https://lnkd.in/eVdKiEvt 2) Successfully setting up grassroots community organizations to run, sustain, and win campaigns without needing support from myself (or larger organization) - somewhat achieved this in a few places but a lot of organizing still needed to change the material landscape to make this possible for many grassroots groups. 3) The dream - Justice in all sectors of life globally! I don't know if it'll happen in my lifetime but working to build a world this is possible!

Network, I’m officially #lookingforwork! ????♀?I don’t usually ask for much here, I tend to be more of a servant-minded advocate. But it’s time to convert the strategic volunteering with work that I love into gainful employment (I think that 10 years of free work is a good stopping point). An ideal position would be one that taps into my skills as a researcher, communicator, and activator for an organization that is helping solve problems for military families. My areas of expertise/ interest: food insecurity, family nutrition, clinical nutrition, military family quality of life, and childhood development. As a #militaryspouse, a hybrid or remote capable position is the mythical unicorn I’m chasing but for traditional work I’m in the Montgomery, Alabama area for the foreseeable future. **NOTE: advocacy work/volunteering is not stopping. However, I am shifting my calendar to focus on more paid work and saving unpaid labor for select projects.**

"Since Whitaker launched [Humans of Public Service] in May 2022, he has shared more than 200 public servants’ stories on the Humans of Public Service?Instagram?and?LinkedIn?accounts. Their narratives underscore what inspired them to embark on a career in government and, Whittaker hopes, help the general public better understand and appreciate the impact of public service. Whittaker also hopes to foster trust between government and the public and grow young people’s interest in public service. Highlighting the people making federal, state and local government work is one way Whittaker hopes the public sector can better attract potential employees, particularly as research shows that Gen Z individuals want jobs that impact their communities and?believe government should play a larger role in addressing societal issues. . . . Stories like that can encourage people from historically marginalized communities to consider working in government, said Sarah Mogulesco, president of the Volcker Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the public sector workforce.
