This resource showcases the unique benefits of working in local government, how unions support council employees, and key conditions negotiated by LGNSW and the unions. This project was a true collaborative effort. An Employment Tribunal has ruled that on-call hours for members of the Humberside Forces Covert Authorities Bureau should be recognised as working time. This decision acknowledges the significant restrictions and personal impact experienced by workers while on standby duty. ? Our team at Thompsons Solicitors, representing Unison members, argued that the restrictive on-call rota breached their right to a daily rest break under the Working Time Regulations 1998. The Tribunal agreed, noting that the stringent requirements during standby periods inhibited members' ability to relax and engage in other activities. ? Abi Agbaje-Williams, an employment lawyer at Thompsons Solicitors, stated: “This judgment affirms the rightful recognition of on-call hours as working time, underlining the significant restrictions imposed on these UNISON members and rewarding the readiness they maintained during these periods. This ruling will help enforce workers’ employment rights regarding on-call duties.” ? JANUARY: The New Jersey Domestic Workers Bill of Rights Act from Richard Codey & Britnee N. Timberlake, MPA was signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy giving basic legal rights for New Jersey's 50,000 domestic workers We're taking a look back at our most impactful moments and legislation from 2024. "The signing of this legislation will give these essential workers the legal protections and rights that every worker deserves, and help prevent the employer abuse they often face,” said Former Governor Codey. The new law provides domestic workers with anti-discrimination and anti-harassment rights, health and safety protections, and privacy rights. “Domestic workers care for families and homes across our state. They deserve basic rights and dignity,” said Senator Timberlake. “In honor of my grandmother, Mary L. Whitely, a career domestic worker who cared for countless children and worked long, hard hours, I am very proud to see my bill signed into law.”
