Medimuse Response: Bridging Generational Expectations in Healthcare with a Nod to Technological Integration In the insightful post by Dr. Zhong Wei Khor, below we are given a comprehensive look at what millennials expect from their healthcare. From digital enablement to personalized, proactive care, the desires are clear and articulate. As someone deeply entrenched in both the old school ethos and the new age of digital healthcare, I see these expectations not only as a roadmap for future innovations but also as a loud call to balance. Embracing Technological Advances The advent of digital tools in healthcare, as pointed out by Dr. Khor, offers unparalleled convenience and efficiency. The integration of AI to expedite and enhance care, the ability to have prescriptions delivered to our doorsteps, and the empowerment through digital apps that track and manage health are all crucial developments. They signify a shift towards a healthcare system that values patient empowerment and accessibility, elements that are fundamentally altering our approach to health and wellness. But Listen and Be Responsive However, as we navigate this digital transformation, it is vital that we, the 'old schoolers,' listen and respond to the nuances of these new expectations. It is essential to ensure that while we embrace these advancements, we do not lose sight of the personal touch and the deep human connection that forms the cornerstone of effective healthcare. The technology is an assistant, a tool—it cannot and should not replace the human elements of empathy, understanding, and care. Let Us Fade with Dignity As we gradually pass the baton to the next generation of healthcare professionals, it’s crucial that this transition honors the values and wisdom of seasoned practitioners. Let us not be shoved off our perch, but rather integrate gracefully with dignity and respect, complementing the new with the old. A Humorous Twist In keeping with our usual writing style, while we certainly don't want to be left behind, let’s ensure we aren’t just old dogs learning new tricks but wise sages guiding the path forward. After all, who says you can’t teach an old doc new tech? Erm, say what ? I can download the app for that too on my phone? A semiretired Medical Consultant in conversation with a fresh faced newly qualified doctor. My medical bag will soon be obsolete or I can adapt it to take wholesome snacks to work instead of reference paper versions of example drug formularies. ?? Conclusion Dr. Khor’s points are a beacon for all of us in the healthcare field. They highlight the need for a healthcare evolution that respects and integrates the insights from all generations. As we look to the future, let’s blend the old with the new in ways that respect each and meet the diverse needs of all patients. #HealthcareInnovation #DigitalHealth #MillennialHealthcare #AIinHealthcare #HealthcareTechnology #TheBrandAeye Dr. Alice Duncan

The shift towards home-based healthcare is not just a trend but a demographic necessity as we approach a significant surge in aging Baby Boomers. While this transition makes economic and social sense, we must ensure our technological infrastructure is ready to support this massive change. Technology Readiness Considerations Digital Infrastructure The move from brick-and-mortar hospitals to home care will require substantial investment in digital infrastructure to enable effective remote monitoring and care delivery. This infrastructure must be robust enough to handle the projected two million Australians aged 85 and over by 2071. Standardization As Spain's experience shows, we must carefully balance technology implementation with in-person care. While virtual care programs are valuable, they shouldn't be the only solution - technology should enhance, not replace, personal care delivery. Complex Care Support Our technological solutions must also support complex care decision-making processes, helping healthcare providers manage difficult cases while maintaining high standards of care. This includes developing secure platforms for multidisciplinary team collaboration and decision support systems. The time to invest in these technological capabilities is now before the demographic shift reaches its peak in 2032. By preparing our digital infrastructure today, we can ensure a smoother transition to home-based care while maintaining quality healthcare delivery.
The Nordic countries are already way ahead on the shift to care in the home and the use of technology to deliver it. Our federated funding models seem to sabotage the adoption of innovative models because the States fund Hospital care and the Feds fund GP’s and Aged Care. Nothing is connected in real time and there is no single source of truth and all we seem capable of is endless pilots while many countries with similar demographics are already doing this . But yes Bernard Salt AM I agree it makes so much sense! Health Services Daily Australia’s leading demographer Bernard Salt says Australia needs to prioritise care at home as part of its overall healthcare model to deal with the country’s shifting demographics. The current focus on bricks-and-mortar hospitals was a 19th-century healthcare model not fit for purpose on the eve of a tidal wave of Baby Boomers aging. “The baby boomer freight train is heading straight for us; we will have to deal with an issue at a scale that humanity has never had to deal with previously: so many people in a stage of the life cycle where they need so much care,” Mr Salt said at the Silverchain Symposium in Perth. “We have to reorganise society in such a way that we can care for the needs of an older population.

The aging of populations and shifting demographics is one of the most impactful—and often overlooked—factors in rising healthcare costs. Birth rates are falling, and life expectancy is rising, leading to more older adults. While this shows progress, it also strains healthcare systems. Understanding the financial impact of an aging population is essential for policymakers, healthcare providers, and societies. By 2050, 22% of the global population will be 60+, up from 12% in 2015. Life expectancy has risen from 48 years in 1950 to 73 years today. In the U.S., those 65+ account for 36% of healthcare spending, though they make up 17% of the population. How Aging Populations Drive Costs: Chronic Diseases 80% of U.S. adults 65+ have at least one chronic condition, increasing the need for ongoing care and medication. End-of-Life Care 25% of Medicare spending goes to those in their last year of life. Long-Term Care As mobility decreases, the need for nursing homes and home care rises. A private nursing home room in the U.S. averages $108,000 per year. Workforce Shortages The demand for geriatric care exceeds the supply of healthcare workers, with a predicted shortage of 10 million workers by 2030. Economic Impact Healthcare systems are under pressure. U.S. Medicare spending will grow from $1 trillion in 2023 to $1.8 trillion by 2033. Countries with aging populations, like Japan, allocate more of their GDP to healthcare. Japan spends 10.9% of GDP on healthcare, partly due to nearly 30% of its population being over 65. Addressing the challenge, solutions must focus on efficiency and sustainability: Preventative Care Preventing chronic diseases with early screenings costs far less than treating them. Leveraging Technology Telemedicine and AI can cut costs while maintaining quality care. Telemedicine visits cost 17% less than in-person ones. Rethinking Care Models Community-based care, like home health services, can reduce costs and improve quality of life. Policy Reforms Governments must encourage preventative care, healthy aging, and public-private partnerships to share long-term care costs. The aging population is both a sign of progress and a challenge. Rising healthcare costs are inevitable but manageable. By investing in prevention, technology, and policy reforms, we can build sustainable healthcare systems for the future. The future of healthcare depends on how we adapt to these changes.

Survey says: Younger patients are not going to put up with your shit. For the past decade, they have been driving a huge upswing in provider-switching. Surveys show that in 2017, 18% of patients switched providers because they were unhappy. By 2021, that number had jumped to 25%. And that's overall numbers. For Millennials and GenZ, you can double it to 50% -- roughly HALF of all Millennials/GenZ have switched healthcare providers because they were unhappy. They're not just leaving with their own healthcare dollars. They may also be making the healthcare decisions for their young kids or aging parents. So what shit specifically are they not putting up with? Survey says: * Bad customer service * Lack of digital customer service options * Bad experience with front desk or admin staff In short: Things that made it difficult to get the care they'd signed up for. Nearly 80% of switchers surveyed cited ease of navigation factors as their reason for leaving. And believe it or not, this is actually great news. Because it can be super-tough to figure out how to build your brand's reputation and offer a quality of care so high that it can be a differentiating factor in a crowded marketplace. But if the main reason your patients are leaving is that you don't offer digital/mobile service/support, and dealing with your front desk is a bad experience? You know exactly what you need to do. You can start fixing that today. And you'd better, because the younger generations will not stand for it.

Interesting white paper by UnitedHealthcare around disease prevalence and healthcare utilization patterns for Millennials and their children. Spoiler alert: things appear to be getting worse. While there is well-placed focus on the Boomer generation entering their Medicare years, their children (Millennials) are contributing to a nationwide shift in higher chronic disease burden. 20 years from now, Medicare will be reckoning with the healthcare decisions that Millennials are making today.
