President Biden's parity pledge and words are worth celebrating: "I don’t know what the difference is between breaking your arm and having a mental breakdown is – it’s health, there’s no distinction...mental health care is health care...essential to people's well-being, and their ability to lead a full and productive life, to find joy, to find purpose, to take care of themselves and their loved ones." For far too long, as most Americans know, our mental health coverage has been subpar. Even with the best insurance, I have spent thousands of dollars annually out of pocket. I realize I am privileged to even be able to write that, as so many others are forced to forgo critical care because of the cost. And in my opinion, the lack of coverage also contributed to the stigma, with patients forced to reconcile a proper health need with a lack of recognition by insurers that it counts. Moving forward, I'm hopeful these changes also shift the way we approach mental health overall: - Having annual (at least) mental health checkups just like our physicals instead of finding therapists when something feels off - Normalizing talk therapy earlier in life, perhaps through middle/high schools and college campuses to start, similar to guidance counselors and academic advisors - Inviting honest exchanges between employees/bosses about having therapy the same way someone has a physical body appointment What would you add to this list? #mentalhealth #wellbeing #healthcare #healthcareonlinkedin ??

Wow can't believe I didn't see this before this. This is a big step forward. Absolutely mental health care is medical care. I'd even go a step forward and say many of our physical health issues stem from problems with our mental health. They are one and the same. Hope to see more health care coverage going forward!

Thank you Sally for sharing this. Mental Health problems have been hidden for fear of humiliation and embarrassment. I am so glad that it is now to be treated as health care. Again, thank you Sally for sharing. ??

Sally Wolf and Georgia A. Bryce-Hutchinson, Thank you for the post and for keeping this conversation top of mind. I would venture that not many people posted because it is easier to ignore the problem than confront it. Some people don't like to go to the doctor for preventative care either. I suppose it is all about accepting that we are vulnerable human beings.
