Here's a little bit of a different #SafetyTopic -- Water Safety. It's pool, lake, and beach season, and taking a swim is a great way to cool off. But water needs to be respected! This summer, take steps to make sure your loved ones -- especially kids -- are safe in and around the water. In my years with the Y, some of the key things we talked about when it comes to water safety are: ??♂?Make sure kids know they need to ask permission before getting in the water. Make it a habit. The child gets permission, and an adult is aware! ?? While all adults should be paying attention, consider creating shifts with designated "Water Watchers." His or her job is to watch the summer fun like a hawk with no distractions. ?? Put your phone down! Especially the Water Watcher. ?? Don't just watch: Get in! Model safe behavior in and around water! ??♀? And finally, the best way to keep kids safe around water is to enroll in swim lessons. The Y (YMCA) invented swim lessons, and there are Ys in communities across the country. Many (Most? All?) provide support for families to participate in programs like swim lessons, even if they are struggling financially. And if you're an adult who can't swim, The Y offers adult swim lessons as well! Will you commit to being a Water Watcher this summer? #watersafety #summertime
Today was SPLASH Day and we are so grateful to our volunteers and sponsors who helped us impact hundreds of Greenville kids today. Especially Kiwanis International who provided vouchers for YMCA swim lessons for underserved communities. For SPLASH Day, we offered free water safety lessons at Prisma Health Family YMCA, Caine Halter Family YMCA, Eastside Family YMCA, and The Sullivan Apartments. Participants learned how to save themselves and others if they or a friend becomes distressed in the water. Spreading dollars. Getting back change. Mecklenburg County's American Rescue Plan Act funds are helping 75 local organizations transform our community. Every cent multiplies, reaching and helping many neighbors. From streets to neighborhoods and homes. That's #TheMeckEffect. Together they're tackling important issues like: - Affordable Housing and Homelessness; - Behavioral Health and Health Equity; - Childcare and Early Childcare Development; - Parks, Environment and Infrastructure; - Workforce and Economic Development. Some of these organizations include Pineville Neighbors Place, which has helped over 190 households with rental support (averaging about $1,100 per household). Additionally, The Summer Camp Fund provides summer camp scholarships to low-income children and so far have helped more than 1,100 kids! Follow the impact at TheMeckEffect.MeckNC.gov

If this speaks to you, please consider donating here and thank you for being part of something meaningful.: https://lnkd.in/end9jnqg On 17th October, I’ll be taking on a challenge that’s both physically and mentally demanding: hiking 20 miles across 6 mountains in a single day. But what drives me isn’t the distance or the elevation. It’s the purpose behind every step. I’m doing this to support Make-A-Wish, an organisation that does something remarkable – it grants wishes to children battling life-threatening illnesses. It’s not just about the wish itself; it’s about restoring a sense of hope, joy, and possibility when it’s needed most. A single wish can ignite a spark that changes everything. Here’s the truth: this isn’t a solo journey. It’s about community, and that’s where you come in. Whether or not you’ve ever hiked a mountain, you can be part of this. You can help lift these children and their families when they need it most. Even a small contribution can have a huge impact. You’re not just donating; you’re participating in creating moments that matter – moments that give hope when it’s hardest to find. Because together, we’re not just reaching the top of a mountain—we’re helping someone else see their future with hope. Roots & Wings is an incredible non-profit organization dedicated to supporting youth aging out of foster care. The statistics speak for themselves: - More than 1 in 5 will become homeless within 18 months of emancipating. - Almost 50% of inmates in our prison systems have spent time in the foster care system. - Only half of aged-out foster youth obtain their GED or High School diploma by age 19. - Just 6% go on to earn a 2- or 4-year degree. In 2023, Roots & Wings members defied the odds: - 100% have a High School diploma. - 94% were employed. - 88% maintained a savings account. - 81% attended an educational, vocational, or certificate program. Join us at the Gala on October 17th, a crucial event that supports Roots & Wings in their mission. Your participation or donation can make a real difference. Chief Financial Officer | Chief People Officer | Servant Leader | Team Builder | I help people and companies achieve goals!
Today felt like the perfect time to jump back into LinkedIn. The last 10-12 months have been quite a journey both personally and professionally. This post isn't meant to relive the last year but to encourage everyone that when your life is turned upside down unexpectedly, it can lead to wonderful outcomes. I found through prayer, reflection, and unwavering support from friends and family, what was initially something extraordinarily difficult became a true blessing. Some will notice I have a "gap" in my work history now. About 4 months. 4 months to jettison a lot of baggage, get my mind and body back to neutral (thank you Brendan Ferns for recommending Getting to Neutral by Trevor Moawad), and to dream again. 4 months to reconnect with my wife and start to make decisions that are focused on me and my family first, not what a job might dictate or require. Call it a gap or a sabbatical or whatever you'd like; I knew in order to be the best for my family and for wherever I chose to go professionally, I had to reset. In October of 2023 I got to meet with some of the team at Grubb Ventures. I wasn't sure if I was ready to come off the sidelines yet. Was I mentally ready? Did I complete my "factory reset?" A few things were clear that were critical to me: 1. The leaders truly cared about the people there. It wasn't lip service or just some core value splattered on a wall. 2. They believed the company was ready to make smart, strategic changes in response to recent growth (I like leading through change believe or not). 3. Grubb cares about the community they live and work in. I joined Grubb as its CFO in November (I know I'm late posting about it). And today we sorted and packed eggs at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC. We did it together. Just like we do each day at the office. I'm so thankful to the team at Grubb for choosing me. I'm grateful to everyone who supported me this last year, especially my wife and family. And while I know God doesn't ever have to reveal His plan for me, I'm blessed that He continues to orient my steps.
Volunteering in our community is one of the many ways?#GVgivesback. This week, the Grubb Ventures team spent a busy morning at the?Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC?helping sort and package 7,000lbs of locally sourced eggs to share with over 500,000 members of our underserved communities in Central and Eastern North Carolina. #team?#community

The people that our local community kitchens support are not just "homeless people". Community kitchens and food banks are the back bones of our community that support all those in need of support. Many of our nations veterans and elders, children and hardworking single parents use the kitchen to fill the gaps. Not only fill the gaps, but for some the weekly food boxes and nightly meals are all they have to survive. With rising costs of living with everything from the gas we use to go to work, to the boots we pull ourselves up with food kitchens are in demand. The demand is something that is hard to keep up with on fixed budgets and limited donations. In the coming weeks that demand will increase as youth will be home more as school lets out. The meals once provided in the school system now fall on the already stretched budgets of the average American household. Lets do what we can to empower and have compassion to gain awareness about who uses the food kitchens and what we can do to help. Even if it's just slinging a few boxes of tomatoes to help out during a deliver. It is a step. #giveback #volunteer #communitywork #foodpantry #careergrowth #personalgrowth #investment #leadership #communityleadership #leadershipdevelopment
