?? Meet the First Milestone in Our Assistance Dog Assessment: House Manners! ?? At Infinity Dogs CIC, we’re proud to introduce you to the first stage of our six-level assessment program after our initial behaviour and training intake assessment for our assistance dogs. This initial phase is dedicated to evaluating house manners, a crucial aspect of our comprehensive evaluation process. Why start with house manners? Because they are the cornerstone of everyday life with an assistance dog. This first level is designed to ensure that our dogs are not only capable of performing tasks but are also well-behaved members of the household. Here’s what we assess: * Stationing: Can the dog stay on a mat for 10 seconds while you prepare a drink? * Communication: Does the dog know how to ask to be let outside? * Independence: Can the dog remain home alone for 90 seconds without distress? * Safety: Will the dog give up a dangerous object on command? * Calmness: Does the dog sit patiently while their lead is put on? These behaviors are just the beginning. They set the stage for the next five levels, where we’ll continue to build on these skills and introduce more complex tasks. Our goal? To ensure that by the end of our program, you have a reliable, well-mannered, and supportive assistance dog ready to be by your side. Our partnerships are eligible to take their candidate assessment after six training hours and their dog must be at least 6 months old. #InfinityDogsCIC #AssistanceDogs #HouseManners #FirstOfSixLevels #forcefree #DogTraining

Service dogs are more common and provide a variety of support functions for their owners. Even when wearing a distinctive vest with "service dog" markings/warnings, owners still deal with people who see the service dog merely as a pet and unknowingly distract the dog from its job. Out of respect to the owners of service animals, and those trained for service, please be considerate and consider these tips: #servicedogs #serviceanimals

#DogBehaviouralTip #DogTrainingTip Walk the perimeter of your property with your dog regularly … There's a couple of good reasons for this… *Even if owners have a ‘glorious looking large section’ I have found with a great number of clients that their dogs wait to go off and ‘play,’ or utilize the section, until their owners get home. However, once the action of patrolling starts, evidence of exploratory play increases (from finding mangled toys dispersed, droppings, neighbours comments etc!) You're doing your bit. You are surveying the territory for potential threats - which could even be the neighbours pesky cat in your dog’s eyes - but this way you're on duty and can have more training control of your dog in these situations in my experience, reducing barking (you may have to address further issues here though) perhaps also aiding a sense of security, Selina McIntyre, Dog Behavioural Consultant & Dog Trainer, Dogs Best Friend. This week's #TrainingTuesday focuses on the appropriate behavior when encountering a dog wearing a service dog vest out in public. While your first instinct might be to greet and pet the dog, doing so can be distracting and potentially dangerous for the handler. Here are a few guidelines to follow when you come across a service dog team in public: 1. Direct your attention towards the person, not the dog. It is crucial for service dogs to remain focused on their job of assisting their handler. It's important to avoid distracting the dog while they are working. 2. Take care to provide both the handler and their dog with adequate room to pass in aisles or crowded spaces. Allow them to go about their business without being interrupted by questions about their dog or requests to pet them. Remember, they're people just like us wanting to go about their everyday activities. 3. Always ask permission before interacting with the dog. Approaching and engaging with a service dog without permission can distract the dog and potentially endanger the handler. It's also very important to teach children to remain calm around service dogs, to politely interact, and not to expect to be allowed to pet a service dog, even if they ask nicely. By adhering to proper etiquette, we not only show respect but also contribute to the well-being and effectiveness of service dogs for their handlers. Let's all play our part in supporting and respecting the valuable work they do!
