Maybe I am a bit late to Oliver Burkeman's 'Four Thousand Weeks', but it is by far the best book I have read on in the "self-help" category. Every other title I have read has promised simple fixes to life's messy and complex challenges which I have tried to implement for short periods before falling short with all of the self-recrimination this entails. This book challenges you to face, not overcome, your finite resources of time and energy - because anything valuable is neccessarily in short supply. It questions your significance and your insignificance in equal measure. It encourages you to be present in the present and embrace it with gratitude. It reminds you of the powerful rhythms of community. Rather than leaving a lingering sense of inadequacy and frustration it made me realise that however many weeks I have left I should treasure each one; avoid the belief I can control life's chaos - or the idea that this would be preferable; accept that limitation is what makes life precious and avoid the idea that serenity, happiness and fulfilment are to be found somewhere in the future. They are here in all the imperfect, and yet perfect, present. Happy New Year.

What defines our happiness? Happiness is defined as a state of contentment, well-being, and satisfaction. Every year our lives are experiencing a higher probability of harsh living conditions. The world is becoming hard to live in, and seeing through the numbers astonishes us to understand how we are blessed. I hope this will enable a perspective to define and measure our happiness. We are not, - 1 in 69 people who are forcibly displaced by conflict and violence due to wars and persecutions - 1 in 200 people who are subject to sexual, physical, and psychological violence due to human trafficking - 1 in 100 people who are depressed, mental illness, and suicidal thoughts due to illicit drug use - 1 in 2000 people who experienced death due to terrorism - 1 in 80 people who lost their loved one due to natural disaster - 1 in 3 people who do not have 2 times food due to poverty and famine Normalizing the numbers shows that 38% of the human population is finding it difficult to see the next day to live. We are very fortunate to be outside, and this should help us to thank God for giving us one more year. Live the life with a heart of love by sharing and caring for others. Practice genuine love and experience true happiness to ensure 38% is decreasing and not growing in the coming new year. Wish you all a happy and truly loving New Year 2025.
