Loved this BBC article today! Mining is a perfect industry where the gains from automation, augmentation and autonomy are obvious - removing humans from unsafe environments & dull and dangerous jobs. It is great to see Rio Tinto being the trail blazer here. But as the article mentions, this comes with its flaws - a safety first mindset and understanding of how humans interact with these solutions is key to their success and prolonged use. This becomes even more important if you seek to use modern AI for any of it to decrease development cost. And if course, the mining industry has other challenges posed by the energy transition - need for more mineral output whilst remaining carbon neutral.
