Have you ever been terminated from a company and they forgot to tell you? I’m not embarrassed to say, I have. It’s actually a bit funny, now, considering I thought this company was more… professional? Astute? Especially since they called ME for help.
Imagine moving across country, fresh out of surgery, getting settled into your new space and rushing to get the internet on so that you could get straight to work! Boxes everywhere, you get your kid settled. The husband is off to his new job and you’re just waiting to find out which client you’ll be servicing.
3 days go by. I ask a very high up official, “what account will I be supporting” and they go “uhhhhh”. Turns out, they’d given someone much more junior… ok, I’ll say it. A COUNTERPART (a white woman) had been given the directive to terminate me. I guess she forgot. ????♀? Didn’t care? Was put in a terrible position by her company to term the person that had trained her? It doesn’t matter to me, now. It was management who failed, miserably!
I still have no idea what happened. But I learned a very important lesson that day. Ain’t not loyalty in labor! Hell, they weren’t even loyal to themselves or their clients. I might’ve had multiple computers, one of which would be a client’s, access to email, access to all the systems I had before.
It worked in my favor, though. I got to spend time volunteering at a great underserved organization and lent my skills for free. They were grateful. They cared much more for their clients’ data integrity, safety, and the community they were serving. That’s something I can get behind!
More importantly, I learned to just be me. No matter what company I’m with/for, I will always speak truth to power, be serious about client objectives, be innovative and think big. I take pride in doing what I was hired to do. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to capitalize on the many other talents I bring to the table. But, I’ll always be Brandi. If you want a lie, don’t ask me. But if you’re serious about change, let’s rap!
??Check back Monday, for the violation of laws and risk exposure in this scenario.
