I recently had an intelligent conversation with someone from a STEM background who thought studying arts and culture was useless. They believed we should focus more on the future and practical skills. But this made me reflect on the true value of the arts. Like Rodin's "The Thinker," which symbolizes deep contemplation, arts encourage us to think critically about our past and present. They offer insights into historical events and societal changes, helping us understand why the world is the way it is today. It’s a myth that came out of the @NSF & @theNASEM. Let’s debate this in public. On camera. The claim that America is inferior in STEM is calumny. What is true is that Americans in STEM behave like *Americans*. Our own scientists aren’t going to act like employees. Our engineers aren’t going to say 'Whatever you say boss!' We aren’t lining up to sign your DEI oaths. Our own scientists and engineers expect their kids to go to the top schools. They expect to get recognized for discoveries. They expect academic freedom. They expect to be financially secure. Etc etc. I say @VivekGRamaswamy, that our system produces the best STEM talent in the world and then promptly destroys most of what it produces in favor of more pliant labor. Let’s have this out."

It’s often said that “You have seven seconds to make a good impression.” Reflecting on how I’ve presented the Stained Glass Roundel Design Competition, I’ve realised that the way opportunities are introduced can influence engagement. When reaching out to schools and youth organisations, I've often seen arts teachers and instructors leading the way in this competition, with fewer STEM educators getting involved so far. Yet, the more I explore the craftsmanship behind #stainedglass, the clearer it becomes that the design and creation of a #stainedglass roundel involves a profound blend of technical expertise and creative thinking. Designing and creating a #stainedglass roundel requires: ??#Science – Explore the science behind glassmaking, colour, and light. ??? #Technology – Integrate digital design tools and modern glassworking techniques. ?? #Engineering – Encourage structural integrity and explore material properties. ?? #Mathematics – Apply math concepts like symmetry and ratios in design. It’s a process where both creative imagination and technical mastery shine. So, could the way we frame subjects influence how they’re perceived? Is there a way we can unlock even richer learning experiences for students, helping them see the world through a broader, more connected lens?
