One day in Art College
When I was in art college our tutor sent us out into the streets one day armed each with a cine camera. We were to capture ‘swinging London’. I happened to chance upon a large brass plaque fastened to some sort of bank. I was interested in the archaic typefaces moulded into the brass. I filmed it for less than five minutes, thinking that was about as much interest a brass plaque could support.
Back at the college we handed our cameras back for processing. The day came when the films were to be viewed. First was my film. I recognised the plaque, it seemed so bare. “Whose film is this,” asked the tutor. I admitted it was mine and waited for the condemnation to begin. “Look at this plaque, a red bus moves majestically across it, then there is a yellow van dissolving into a million colours. Well done David, you certainly kept your eyes open.” I kept my mouth shut.
