Medical providers often find ourselves caring for everyone around us, driven by our deep desire to help others. This can lead to providers taking on the emotional burdens of others as their own. While helping others is a noble trait, it's crucial to ask ourselves: are we grounded? Do we truly know who we are on a deep, visceral level? Understanding ourselves is essential. It helps us distinguish between our emotions and those of others. Without this self-awareness, we risk becoming emotional sponges, absorbing the feelings of those around us. At Rx for The Business of Medicine, we encourage all medical providers to invest time in self-reflection. Know what is yours and what isn't. This clarity will not only improve our well-being but also enhance our ability to care for others effectively. #MentalHealth #SelfAwareness #MedicalProfessionals #Codependency #Wellbeing

As providers, our instinct is to support those around us. However, it's crucial to distinguish our emotions from those of others to avoid emotional burnout. Take time for self-reflection, meditation, or prayer to truly understand our own emotional state. Knowing what is ours and what isn't can make all the difference in providing the best care for others while maintaining our own well-being.

What I thought would make me fulfilled in kidney care: ?? Mastering medical knowledge ?? Perfecting technical skills ?? Acquiring a large patient base What actually makes me fulfilled: ?? Truly understanding my patients ?? Seeing improvements in their well-being ?? Fostering meaningful connections with them Everyone chases the 1st list—but it usually ends in disappointment. https://lnkd.in/gmQ2Sf9K #kidneycare #medicalknowledge #technicalskills #patientcare #wellbeing

I coached several physicians in the last month who are drowning in shitty jobs. There were more similarities than differences. What can I do instead of medicine? I need to get out but don’t know the next best step. I want to start a business but it’s overwhelming. I’ve been dreaming of having my own DPC practice but that feels impossible. But what almost every single one of them needed was rest. They either felt unworthy of rest or it didn’t occur to them to address their exhaustion. It’s scary as hell to take time off to “just rest” but our lives depend on it. Suicidal ideation and attempt increases when an exhausted human is unable to envision a future in which there are less mental/emotional demands. That is medicine for most of us. Talking with other physicians helps. Getting permission (that you don’t really need) from a supportive peer helps too. There’s free coaching available inside the Rebel Physician community, along with dozens of other resources. Join at www.RebelPhysician.com

Our work in medicine can be emotionally challenging. As healthcare professionals, we are often exposed to the darker side of human existence. Despite this, we continue to believe in the good intentions of people and strive to make it better together. We know that our work goes beyond just providing medical care. It also involves providing emotional support to our patients, especially children who may not have anyone else to turn to. It's a powerful responsibility, but it can also be a heavy burden to bear. However, we must remember that the beauty of medicine lies in its humanity. We do what we do because we care deeply about our patients and their well-being. The emotional toll may be profound, but it's a small price to pay for the privilege of helping others. To all my fellow healthcare professionals, let's remember why we started this journey. Let's continue to care for our patients with empathy and compassion, even in the face of adversity. Our work may not always be easy, but it is always worth it. #healthcare #medicine #empathy #compassion

The Cost of Reticence: Breaking the Cycle of Medical Gaslighting Do you SPEAK UP or stay quiet? You can probably remember at least one time when you sat in the waiting room for a medical appointment, your palms sweaty, heart racing. About to meet with your doctor, the fear of not being heard crops up, even the uncertainty of how to say what’s really on your mind brings anxiety. Here I am, waiting for my medical appointment this morning, and thankfully, I am well-equipped with questions and strategies. I know the paralysis of that internal struggle of not knowing what to say or how to say it. But more than that, I know that if I don’t speak up, what follows may cost me dearly, way more than the momentary unease. Is it costing you? Stories of medical gaslighting abound and we’re only now touching the surface. Addressing the issue head on can break the cycle of distrust between us and our healthcare providers. Speaking up can help us make sure we have access to a proper diagnosis, treatment and support. With this in mind we have produced the Women & Medical Gaslighting Primer to introduce you to the core of the problem. Furthermore, we are developing a follow up publication with the tools, language and strategies that can give you confidence and skill in voicing your concerns so that you can collaborate effectively with your healthcare professionals. One strategy we include is about research and documentation before your appointments. How are you feeling, specifically? What do you notice is changing in your body? What would you like to know about its functioning? This is not the time to be reticent to speak. Summon your belief that you deserve what’s best for your body. You know it well, trust that! Failing to speak up in the face of medical gaslighting comes at a high cost. Join us in breaking the cycle by being proactive! Ready to learn more? Get started by downloading our free guide, Women & Medical Gaslighting, to discover what it looks like and how it can impact your health: https://lnkd.in/dK9y9-Z6

In the world of healthcare, a profound bond exists between clinicians and their patients. This connection is not only about providing medical care but also about the emotional and psychological impact that this relationship has on both parties. ???? As clinicians, our primary focus is the well-being of our patients. We strive to alleviate their pain, to provide comfort, and to guide them through their health journey. Each patient is unique, with individual needs and concerns that require personalized care and attention. ?????????? What often goes unnoticed, however, is the profound effect that patients have on us, their clinicians. Each patient interaction enriches our practice, broadens our perspective, and deepens our empathy. We learn from their strength, resilience, and positivity in the face of adversity. ???? The stories that our patients share serve as constant reminders of why we chose this profession. They inspire us to continually strive for excellence and to never lose sight of our mission - to heal, to comfort, and to care. ???? The clinician-patient relationship is a beautiful, reciprocal bond that goes beyond the confines of a medical facility. It is a lifelong journey of learning, growing, and healing together. As clinicians, we are infinitely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of our patients' lives and for the impact they have on us. ???? #bethechange #healthehealers #physicianburnout #healthcareculture

Insights from the Heart: Lessons Learned as a Family Doctor / General Practitioner In my journey as a family doctor, I've learned profound lessons about empathy, compassion, and human connection that have reshaped my approach to medicine and life itself. First and foremost, I've come to understand that at the core of every medical encounter lies a desire to live well. It's not merely about adding years to one's life, but rather infusing those years with vitality, purpose, and meaning. As a GP, I've learned to look beyond the diagnosis, recognizing that I am not communicating with a disease, but with a person—a person who seeks understanding, compassion, and hope. Listening with genuine curiosity and empathy is key. It's about delving beyond symptoms to understand my patients' fears, hopes, and aspirations, becoming a trusted ally in their journey towards healing and wellness. Effective healthcare isn't just about medical knowledge and skills; it's about fostering a culture of compassion—a commitment to alleviating suffering, even when a cure isn't possible. Collaboration is essential. Healthcare is multidisciplinary, requiring the collective efforts of diverse individuals. By fostering an inclusive environment, we can harness our collective wisdom to deliver the best possible care. Ultimately, trust and compassion are the currency that transcends all barriers in healthcare, forging bonds of trust and mutual respect between patients and caregivers. As I reflect on my journey, I invite you to ponder the lessons you've learned in your own field. Let's continue to share insights, inspire one another, and strive for excellence. #primarycare #generalpractice #compassionate #trust
