The Outpost is a single-player decision-based game set in the depths of space, in which players enter the story of a lost spaceman as his ship faces extreme losses, leaving?him stranded on an abandoned space outpost station. Players must explore the station and balance the?needs of the spaceman and the outpost to stay alive until a rescue mission arrives. The idea of the elevator pitch is extremely important for comic books and for board games as I learned going through the process of attempting to pitch my games in the past. The professionals at Design Edge Inc. really helped walk me through everything in an easy to understand manner I couldn't recommend them more. I'm really excited that _Designing Historical Games for Class_ (Routledge,hoping 2026) gets me finally around to applying the Historical Problem Space framework to board games. This chapter, for example, discusses how hps is modeled in boardgame mechanics. So it'll be a resource for ed. designers and students but also something Historical Game Studies folk who want tools for analyzing board games can use. Now if only I could draft and write faster!!!!! 2026 is coming though!

one of my favorite aspects of game design has always been working with analog components and discovering what is fun about a concept through early playtests. The bits and pieces are cobbled together from other games or play sets and in a short amount of time you begin gathering the crucial playtest data you need to make a good game. This board game was created from concept to playable prototype in one morning. Who here thinks they can run the best Pet Shop? In this game players collect and care for pets while making sales and attaining happy customers. ages: 6+ time: 20 min players: 2

An excellent example of what can be done with voxels! This week I ditched the idea of marching cubes, which can not preserve sharp corners, in place of Dual Contouring. Dual Contouring is used by many game studios, including Hello Games No Man's Sky. Dual Contouring allows not only for sharp edges to be rendered, but is relatively easy to implement and can be modified for various looks. As you can see from the video, there are examples of overhangs and arches, something that would be impossible for my previous, 1 dimensional method. Because this creates meshes in 3 dimensions, it will be significantly more challenging to optimize, which I am excited to explore in the coming weeks!

Answer me this: ?? We re tasked with making a colony sim game, thats what we pitched, thats what we got funding for. But looking at Steam and the way the colony sim tag is used, its clear its missused to describe any sort of game with some building elements and NPCs (incorrect from a game design perspective). What kind of game would you develop? According to game design knowledge, or Steam tag? ??

Hey all, I have an update to share: I am gaining experience with Unity by participating in the Bigmode Game Jam 2025 with Timothy Cammack! We will have until February 2nd 2025 to submit our project, however far we get. The theme for this event is "Power". My idea for the game: The player is a demonic or wraithlike being that attacks villages. They will consume enemies at night to gain their power and obtain abilities, until daylight breaks. During the day, players will need to survive by using their abilities to avoid combat until night falls again. I chose to focus on a specific foundational topic: implementing design patterns. So far, I have implemented the Flyweight Design Pattern to spawn in enemies. This system can manage a large amount of data from a single point, making it great for that task. As I progress, I'll find more ways to implement patterns into the core systems of the game. I'll try to keep updates coming out regularly over the week!

In Dr. Kris Alexander's RTA928 Intro to Game Design class at Toronto Metropolitan University, we were assigned the task of designing our own game. Over the semester, we explored various topics such as game mechanics, aesthetics, platforms, monetization, and more, applying these concepts to our own project. For our final assignment, we were required to develop a visual concept tool that would illustrate the different elements of our game. My game 'Blacksmiths Forge' can be explained through the concept tool below:

Most people (especially those outside of the industry) serverly under estimate how much effort, coordination and planning it takes to make a game. Just making an asset alone is usually a multi step process involving various specialists coming together (depending on the team size). The animation shows a relatively smooth development of a single door. Which is a dream come true for a producer like myself. But the reality is that, that rarely ever happens. So much more happens under the hood. You’ll have people arguing over designs, others will be proposing new things that the “door” can do, etc. Easily complicating matters. If not for a producer/manager or a director of some kind to keep it in check and ensure that the development is aligned with the vision… it’s easy for development to spiral out of control.
