Mangroves, vital for climate mitigation and adaptation, are critical for carbon sequestration—storing up to five times more carbon than land-based forests. They also protect against storms, erosion, and flooding while supporting biodiversity. Natural climate solutions such as agroforestry and afforestation have an integral climate contribution to make under the broader category of nature-based solutions. However, as the market for these solutions has grown, so too has scrutiny, which has often highlighted some of the challenges in accurately defining what constitutes a natural climate solution, and how a buyer can be assured of its ongoing nature-positive impact. Members The Nature Conservancy, have recently released five foundational principles to support the implementation of natural climate solutions: 1) Nature-based 2) Sustainability 3) Climate-additional 4) Measurable 5) Equitable These new principles are intended to support natural climate solutions to ensure they are high-integrity, transparent, and promote human rights – particularly of Indigenous land stewards.
