Good words are akin to good cultivation. We talk a lot about culture as as workplace dynamic but far less about it being an action. I couple good words with actions, but a part of that actions is the place of authentic interaction. Being mindful about good words creates a buffer against an ever present ideology that it is good to not care what others think. Even if we insulate ourselves from other people's words or opinions, the DNA of culture is cultivation. That means cultivating good habits like reading the room and knowing when silence is more powerful than good words. Emotional regulation is a huge part of cultivation which includes knowing when candor is appropriate. Most of the time it is not and it is important to care about what others think. What requires practice in terms of emotional regulation is taking things personally. Good words are only good if we are also open to receiving words, no matter the form they take and it is a great effort and discipline to recognize the roots of words may stem from an origin point that we might not be familiar with. Good words are not about good impressions, it is about great listening and understanding rather than reacting. We know that happens when we feel stronger in this.
