World Children's Day is usually celebrated annually on the 20th of November with the intention to emphasize the importance of children's well-being and rights. The theme for this year is "Listen to the Future." Children are the leaders of tomorrow. Yes! We need to actively listen to these future leaders whose hopes, dreams and visions for the future has been shattered by adults for personal interest. Yes! We need to listen to children who dropped out of school and engaged in non formal learning because their right to education has been tampered with as a result of a crises they know nothing about. Yes! We need to listen to these children who constantly cry out for safety, protection and the need to hold their perpetrators to account. Yes! We need to listen to these children who do not have access to formal education talk less of digital learning in this rapidly changing digital landscape. For how long shall we continue to silence their voices? For how long shall we allow them to sit on the ground to learn? For how long shall we continue to pretend? This is the reality in my county. Thanks to #UNICEF #UNESCO and others who have children's right to education at heart. A lot has been done and more still needs to be done in conflict affected and hard to reach communities in the NWSW. Let's give them a voice.

Through Enhanced Primary Level Intervention (EPLI), we’ve been transforming education in 34 schools and 9 community centers, bridging critical literacy and numeracy gaps for primary students. We’re also investing in capacity building of parents, empowering them to become co-educators for their children. Together, we’re creating a future where parents play a key role in ensuring sustainable, lifelong learning for generations to come. SDG4 - Quality Education

Children need a diverse range of skills to thrive. But sometimes different funders have a different focus which makes it hard for partners to work in an holistic way. So we joined forces with leading education funders to collaborate around a shared vision. Our aim? To make it easier for our partners to support children to develop a full spectrum of skills - from literacy and numeracy to creativity and social-emotional learning. These efforts, led by The Brookings Institution and International Education Funders Group (IEFG), led to this joint commitment statement, which creates opportunities for co-funding, joint research, and collective impact. Exciting developments are on the horizon as we work together for a brighter future in education.

Does anyone remember the scene in Apollo 13 where they are testing and retesting the lunar module start up sequence to access more amps? This is what we need to do in education continuously, reexamine what we do, ask 'why do we do things this way?' and 'is there a better way?'. What would happen if lessons were shortened by 10 minutes to enable something else to happen for example?
It is long overdue. Recognizing that the curriculum is key and that not all children have the same motivations, interests, and skills is the beginning of getting it right for the future. I am sure that many will have come across children and young people who are seen to ‘need’ an alternative provision because they don’t fit the curriculum and examination pathways for the majority. Why should children have to go elsewhere? Why should some children be deprived from learning alongside their friends and peers because schools are not meeting their needs? Inclusion is about every child feeling they belong and that their needs and interests matter. We are so fortunate in Luton that many of our schools recognise this. They value inclusion and work to adapt and accommodate. A great quote from one of our Headteachers ‘School readiness is not about children being ready for school - but about the school being ready to meet the child’s needs.’
