As the curtain draws on the Ph.D. phase of my journey, I can't help but reminisce about where it all started. Just before COVID, I decided to pursue a Ph.D. COVID provided an unexpected perfect segue from one level of grad school to another. The first year was bumpy, and it tested my limits in all aspects of life. However, there was a human hand that made my transition bearable. This post is not about my four-year read-write-rest and repeat journey. Or an intellectually stimulating journey, if you think grad school is. Instead, this post is about that human hand. That hand of my mentor and friend and now a colleague. Someone I am proud to call a friend. Someone whose worth you may quickly fail to acknowledge until your friends openly confess their envy, for you have a mentor who goes out of his way to mold you into a great scholar. His genuine desire for the success of his mentees is the hallmark of his mentor-mentee relationships. He strikes a perfect balance between offering you space to flourish and guiding you. He encourages you to push back and challenge his perspectives. I can go on and on… Good people, I have had a great mentor-mentee relationship with Jules Woolf. If anything, my “no-correction” dissertation speaks to his ability. Thank you, Jules Woolf, for being you, for being genuine, and for being there. The Department of Recreation, Sport, and Tourism at Illinois is lucky to have you. To Rekha Janarthanan and Jonathan Ruwuya, having crossed the bridge, I can confirm that you are in very good and capable hands. Enjoy the journey!
Thank you so much Byron Juma! It has been an amazing journey and I feel very privileged to have been a part of it. I miss our long talks in lab! The sport management academy and profession is very fortunate to have someone of your calibre and character. You are going to make such a tremendous difference to so many people's lives!
Congratulations Byron Juma

1 周Congratulations, Byron. Jules is one of the finest academics I have ever had privilege of working with - a true gentleman and an excellent scholar. We can never pay our supervisors back, so pay it forward by sharing the lessons you learned with Jules along the way. Give the PhD students you supervise and the people you work with the space to flourish and thrive as Jules did for you.
