Director of Communications @ Greenlife Industry Australia | National strategy, engagement, issues management & communications
? The announcement of a new Senate Inquiry into big box retailers, including Bunnings, is a big win. This Inquiry, initiated by National Party Senator Ross Cadell, was one of the recommendations the Senate Supermarket Inquiry made earlier this year. ? You might recall that the Supermarket Inquiry’s main purpose was to look at the behaviour of major supermarkets like Woolworths and Coles – but it also heard evidence from greenlife growers supplying Bunnings. ? The new Big Box Inquiry will focus solely on large format retailers like Bunnings. ? I was disappointed that, while acknowledging the disadvantages growers face in supplying Bunnings, Dr Craig Emerson declined to admit Bunnings to the Food & Grocery Code of Conduct in his June review. Instead, in his report, Dr Emerson gave Bunnings two years to negotiate an agreement directly with the greenlife industry. ? My organisation,?Greenlife Industry Australia, is a small, not-for-profit. So, we’re at a significant disadvantage in negotiating meaningful change for greenlife growers with the giant retailer. ? However, the Big Box Inquiry has the potential to change that. We are optimistic that today’s announcement will fast-track a fair and equitable trading environment, and result in a robust, legally binding outcome that will ensure growers can make a living from growing plants. ? I hope Bunnings will continue to engage in negotiations with us about a formal agreement to ensure it treats growers fairly and in line with the law, despite its significant bargaining power and 70% market share.

I understand foodservice sales, marketing and distribution and help you connect within it and navigate the complexities they can bring.
How do you differentiate yourself in foodservice distribution can be the way you change the way your W2 looks every year. As a foodservice sales professional, when I say invest in your vendors I mean that in a sense of connecting and engaging. Often many view vendors as a pest. That is not meant to be negative, but more of, I just don't have time for another ride along. What I learned in my career storytelling about farms, artisans and producers with chefs is that if you can learn the story and show that passion in your meetings it will correlate to more sales for you. Here are 3 ways I have found investing in vendors to be beneficial. 1) They know the story. You need to learn it to tell it. Take the ride along, zoom, call or text. Ask for POS, Videos, Samples and ask questions. You knowing a little about a lot can go a long way for your customer. 2) Regular communication with your vendors shows that you are out working the streets with them. That also means that they will want to work with you. When they come to market you will get asked to go to dinner, you will be someone they want to invest in. 3) Passion is contagious. If you do the first two with one, you will repeat them. That also means you will get on the radar for a possible farm or production visit. You know just as well as I do that one of the best ways to learn is to go step foot somewhere. In early 2020 I had the opportunity to visit Verlasso Salmon in Chile. It was an eye opening experience to aqua culture, to see scale and passion at another level. To this day I still use the photos and videos I took while at the farm to share with chefs the story and quality. Investing in your vendors will create deep learning that can provide ways for you to be valued far beyond a price list with your customers. Yes it takes more work, but doesn't being good at anything require more investment?

(AUSTRALIA 19.12.23) Amid price-gouging allegations, supermarkets must reveal how they price products. --- [AG: We reiterate our concerns, emphasizing the need to broaden the focus of scrutiny beyond Woolworths and Coles to encompass other major players like Aldi, as well as independent retailers such as IGA, FoodWorks, Foodland, and others. This comprehensive approach is crucial for gaining a more accurate understanding of potential "price gouging" practices within our fresh produce retail sector in Australia. Our ongoing concern is that the Senate inquiry should not only scrutinize the pricing practices of supermarkets but should also delve into the intricate pricing dynamics within our entire fresh produce supply chain, commencing at the farm level. Key questions need to be raised regarding the pricing mechanisms among Australian growers and farmers. Additionally, a thorough examination of the pricing mechanisms within our privatized and shareholder-owned fresh produce wholesale markets is warranted. These wholesale markets, trading in on-consignment supplied fresh produce, present challenges with our major fresh produce retailers procuring their fresh produce from our wholesale markets at prices below the Australian grower's cost of production. This situation often arises because retailers opt to source from wholesale markets, rather than directly from growers, seeking more profitable and sustainable prices that growers cannot match when delivering on consignment to these markets. The inquiry should address the involvement of middlemen post-farm gate in our fresh produce supply chain, because their roles contribute to unnecessarily higher inflated retail prices. While our fresh produce retailers frequently and falsly highlight their support for our farmers and growers, it remains unclear what proportion of our fresh produce on their shelves is directly procured from our Australian farmers and growers versus being sourced through intermediaries in our fresh produce supply chain. A critical aspect of the inquiry should be unveiling the journey of our fresh produce from farm to retailers' shelves and scrutinizing the pricing mechanisms at each stage. The significant difference between what the grower/farmer is paid at the farmgate and the retail price on the shelves needs thorough investigation and explanation from all of our fresh produce retailers. While acknowledging the positive step taken with the Senate inquiry, there is a need to go beyond current practices and demand transparency in pricing mechanisms throughout our entire fresh produce supply chain. Past inquiries have yielded explanations from our major retailers, but a united effort from Australian farmers and growers is crucial to bring about meaningful and long-term change. Without such collective action, similar Senate inquiries will become a recurring pattern in the future.] --- https://lnkd.in/gBjpSZpt
