Today, we honor and celebrate the resilience, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across the globe. Indigenous communities have long been the stewards of the land, holding deep knowledge and traditions that have been passed down through generations. At the Indigenous Bar Association, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples as they continue to exercise their rights, protect their lands, preserve their cultures, and assert their self-determination. Self-determination is at the heart of Indigenous sovereignty and justice—an essential right that empowers communities to define their futures on their own terms. Indigenous Peoples Day is a holiday celebrating and honoring the culture, history, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in the Americas. It is observed on the second Monday in October, coinciding with Columbus Day, which has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1937. The movement to establish Indigenous Peoples Day began in the late 20th century as a response to the celebration of Columbus, whose voyages are often associated with the colonization and oppression of Native American communities. Advocates for Indigenous Peoples Day seek to acknowledge the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous populations and promote awareness of their cultures and rights. The first official observance of Indigenous Peoples Day took place in 1990, when the state of South Dakota recognized it. Since then, numerous states, cities, and institutions across the U.S. have adopted Indigenous Peoples Day as an alternative to or in addition to Columbus Day. The day serves as an opportunity for education, reflection, and advocacy for Indigenous rights and sovereignty. Advocates emphasize the importance of recognizing the rich histories and diverse cultures of Indigenous peoples, as well as the need for reconciliation and healing from the impacts of colonization. ? Today, we should take a moment to honor and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples across our nation. Indigenous Peoples’ Day reminds us to recognize the deep and enduring connections Native communities have to the land and their profound contributions to our society, past and present. ? #IndigenousPeoplesDay #CelebrateDiversity #SupportIndigenousRights #OneGlobalTeam #MBE #WBE #RKMC

Today, we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day—a day to honor the history, culture, and resilience of Indigenous communities across the Americas. It is a time to recognize the invaluable contributions and rich cultural heritage of the original inhabitants of this land, whose stories, traditions, and wisdom have shaped the very fabric of our society. Celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day also serves as a powerful rejection of the glorification of Christopher Columbus, a figure whose legacy is marred by violence, enslavement, and the initiation of colonization that devastated countless Indigenous lives and cultures. For too long, the narrative surrounding Columbus has perpetuated myths of discovery while erasing the painful truths about his actions and the catastrophic impact they had on Native populations. By refusing to acknowledge Columbus Day, we resist the whitewashing of history that ignores the brutal realities of colonization: the exploitation, forced conversion, disease, and genocide faced by Indigenous peoples. Honoring Columbus perpetuates a narrative of conquest that dismisses the humanity and agency of those who were already here. It is time to embrace a more honest and inclusive account of history—one that acknowledges the harm inflicted and uplifts the voices that have long been silenced. Indigenous Peoples’ Day invites us to reflect on our shared history, confront uncomfortable truths, and commit to a future that prioritizes justice, equity, and respect for Indigenous rights. It is not just a day of remembrance, but also a call to action—to support Indigenous communities, advocate for their rights, and recognize the enduring strength of their cultures. Let today be a celebration of Indigenous resilience and a rejection of the glorification of a legacy built on the oppression of others. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #HonorNativeHistory #RejectColumbusDay #CelebrateIndigenousCulture #DecolonizeHistory #IndigenousResistance #TruthAndReconciliation #UpliftNativeVoices #IndigenousRights #NativePride #LandBack #ResilienceAndResistance
