As graduation approaches, I was invited by the Brooklyn College Department of Physics to share my research, experience attending #apsmarch meeting, and advice and resources on how to thrive as a non-traditional student. What's not discussed enough in STEM education is the impact of being nontraditional student. My classmates are a mix of commuters, working class, independent students, and breadwinners in addition to being diverse in ethnicity, culture, and religion. Why is that important? Because it's extremely difficult to follow the traditional STEM pipeline to PhD. How do you take off for 3 months from work for an REU if your income contributes to your families household? How do you improve your chances of grad school admission if no one tells you to contact professors prior to submitting your application? Giving this talk and answering their questions helped shed some light on the graduate school admission process, potential REU's in NYC, ways to develop nontraditional research experience (like mine), and even helped a student decide to fully change their major to physics. What an extremely fulfilling full circle moment towards closing the undergraduate chapter of my physics journey. #physicsresearch #sciencetalk #undergradexperience

A few days ago, I came across a FB post referring to a student as a "weaker student," and as a physics professor, it deeply saddened me. What is the true purpose of higher education? Is it not to foster critical thinking and apply research in meaningful ways, rather than simply memorizing formulas and solving problems that are quickly forgotten? A student who may struggle with memorization or solving abstract problems, yet is active in research, on the right track for publication, and is passionate about education, improvement in teaching, and equity, is, in my view, an exceptionally "strong student". This kind of dedication is often rare in many science students/faculties. It’s time we shift our perspective. The Physics Ph.D. qualifier exam, for example, often emphasizes solving abstract problems with little to no relevance to a student’s research, and in my view, it 100% fails to measure the true potential of a researcher. What we label as a “weaker student” may, in fact, be a highly intellectual individual who simply finds themselves in the wrong environment. As educators, it is our responsibility to create inclusive spaces where all students feel they belong and consider students who are taking our class. This requires more than just words—it demands intentional action. Yesterday I went to the College of Science Biology departments graduate school information session and showcase open house. I know I plan on get a Ph.D in Mathematics but it was still wonderful to see the posters of research the biology Ph.D students were working on. The information session has some general knowledge on why should a person consider getting a Ph.D? What are the benefits? Yes, most of those questions were fitted to undergraduate biology majors but in any major in the college of science like math, chemistry, biology, geology, psychology, and other sciences and education areas. There are options to pursue a Ph.D. One of them is research for a passion to continue studying a subject and finding something new in the process in order to publish. As a masters and Ph.D student in mathematics some day I want to do research in combinatorics and differential equations. It was great networking with some of the Biology Ph.D students and hearing what they had published and worked in their labs. I cannot wait for the MathPosium this semester that will be dope to see what the mathematics Ph.D students are conducting and going to publish. It was a great opportunity to attend the Eleventh Graduate Student Conference 2024(Clemson, April). The conference provided an excellent platform to learn about recent findings on several topics of Applied and Computational Mathematics and engage with fellow researchers. Attending the conference also provided an opportunity to meet and learn from other researchers in the direction of my research topic , Reduced Basis Method for solving Partial Differential Equations.
