The stress builds to a feverish pitch by Yom Kippur. You’re playing to packed houses full of congregants hungry for some inspiration and meaning... With the knowledge that many of them will not return till next Yom Kippur. So it’s your one shot at reaching them… And whatever you say forms their impression of you as their rabbi for an entire year. Suffice to say, whatever goes down when you get up to speak today, is a pretty big deal. ________ So.... I used to overthink and over-prepare for High Holiday sermons like my life depended on it. Which meant: - Sleepless nights trying to come up with the perfect Dvar Torah and message, - Pacing the streets, crafting the message and its delivery in my head, - Jettisoning everything at the last minute b/c I didn't think it was good enough... _________ And then comes along Rabbi Mark Dratch, quoting his father-in-law, Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm, who said: "Rabbis make a VERY BIG mistake - they over prepare for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.... They spend so much time thinking about it and worrying about - that it falls flat. Instead, they should just give a very good Shabbos Drasha - and it'll hit a homerun." The innocent & unknowing expressions of whether to feel joy or sorrow transcend the complexities of war. In those faces, all notions of right or wrong, victories or losses, dissolve into questions that may never find answers. Who is to blame? Who started it? What is the price? And more importantly, who bears the true cost ? The trauma and grief are often etched most deeply on those who have no hand in the conflict. From children caught in crossfire to families torn apart, the human cost of war always outweighs the political gains. The wounds left behind—emotional and physical—take generations to heal, if ever. War leaves scars, not just on battlegrounds but on hearts and minds, questioning humanity's purpose in conflict. What They Never Tell You About War War, beyond what we may think of it, is a tragedy in its rawest form. It destroys homes, lives, and futures. But its most devastating effect is on children—the youngest and most vulnerable members of society.
