Sharing this FREE post Jill Schildhouse and I wrote that dives deep into some common questions writers get asked often from publicists: -"Can you update a story to include my client?" -"Can you edit my client's title, the link the publication linked to, a quote they said?" -"Can you add my client to an old article you may be updating?" -"Can you add a do follow link to the story?" etc.... There are times when a story can be edited but a lot of times when it cannot. Here's what to know: https://lnkd.in/gj__D2r9

"For small news organizations, whether new or established, having an intern on hand sounds tempting. But for editors stretched thin covering a community alone or with tiny staffs, is the effort worth it? On balance, the editors and publishers interviewed for this project said yes. Not only can an intern expand coverage, but also, training the next generation of reporters satisfies the mission, whether articulated or unspoken, of many newsroom leaders. Our target audience for this handbook includes editors of both place-based newsrooms and news organizations that cover topics such as criminal justice or climate. This handbook, designed specifically to meet the needs of small-newsroom managers, is the first of its kind.?" https://lnkd.in/gARPNBtV

The editorial calendars and content for each of our publications is influenced by our editorial advisory boards. The Editorial Advisory Board for Institutional Real Estate Europe just met three weeks ago in Rottach-Egern, a picturesque village nestles in the Bavarian Alps near Munich. More than several trillion dollars of investment capital were represented during this two day event, the investor representatives fro which engaged in spirited dialogue about the issues that have been keeping them up at night and the challenges they've been facing in managing their real estate portfolios. Simply skimming the editorial calendar below and reading the articles that will be published according to that calendar will give any reader incredible insights into the concerns that will be driving investment decision making throughout the UK and Europe over the coming months. It also should inform anyone seeking to build or strengthen relationships with these investors and other like them that they represent about what topics are likely to stimulate strategic discussions with those investors. Engaging those investors first before you start to pitch whatever it is you're promoting is a much more effective strategy. For the investors reading this, our editorial calendars and publications should give you a much better idea of the issues your peers in the UK and European investor community are grappling with. (It's nice to know sometimes that you're not alone, as well as helpful to learn how others are dealing with similar issues). Subscriptions for representatives of qualified investor organizations are available at no cost. This program is made possible by grants from the sponsors of our publications. Check it out!
Participating in our editorial content is considered educational and is complimentary for your firm to pursue with Institutional Real Estate, Inc. We recently released our Institutional Real Estate Europe editorial calendar for the first half of 2025. Please take the time to explore the January-June topics, and if there is an article that resonates with you, reach out to Marek Handzel at [email protected] to suggest someone from your firm be interviewed. Please get your interviewee suggestions in early, as our editors have long lead times and start working on stories three months prior to the publication date.

Talented writer, editor, and columnist Karin Klein writes a scathing piece in The Hollywood Reporter concerning the ill-conceived, poorly handled decision by the owner of the LA Times to have the Times offer NO endorsement in the '24 Presidential election. Read her observations and reasoning with care and learn from a seasoned professional about ethics, timing, judgment in a deeply important election season. Then (calling all writers), observe Klein's deft use of stealth metaphors in the piece. You'll find therein these stealth metaphors: “carry out,” “remotely,” “weigh in on,” “his call,” “11th hour,” “throw the race,” “throws shade,” “stakes too big,” “monkeying,” “formed and hardened,” “take a stand,” “railing,” “comparing apples and oranges,” “throw under the bus,” and “blocked.” Stealth metaphors provide speed, insight, focus, and brevity as a talented writer moves us through complex considerations concerning press and media practices. Do you know when to use (and not use) stealth metaphors? Hope so. Let me know. #metaphorsandbeyond
When I was abruptly laid off from the Los Angeles Times in June 2023 by a form email – no call, no meeting, no personal touch, just a mass email sent to some 74 employees – I spent time wondering whether the newspaper’s management was so dysfunctional that it no longer knew how to carry out a simple staff reduction, or whether it simply didn’t care about basic courtesy toward its people, including one like me who had been writing and/or editing for the paper since 1989.

Today's installment of the semi-regular, lowly-touted series, "Unsolicited Advice for Soon-to-Be College Grads:" Just about every time I speak with college students, some variation of the same question comes up: what are you looking for in a [insert job: MMJ, producer, etc.]? My answer is always the same: Passion. It's not looks, or your writing, or your on-camera presence. I mean, sure, I look for those, too. Those things usually will get you in front of a news director for an interview. But if you don't have a passion for this, then that's usually where our paths part. Journalism is not a job. It's a calling. You can be a great accountant without having a passion for math. You don't have to love math to be good at it. You cannot be a great journalist if you don't have a passion for it. Being a journalist means being a servant. This is a public service. Nothing we do is for ourselves. This is not an easy job. If you don't love journalism, I fear the juice won't be worth the squeeze for you. Because even if you love journalism, there are many days where journalism won't love you back. Are you willing to fight through those days for the greater good of this calling? The second question I get asked the most is, "What do news directors want to see in my reel?" The answer is the same as the first question. If you have passion, it will show in the stories you tell. That's what I wanna see on your reel. #journalism #collegegraduates #newsrooms #storytelling #storyteller

As political parties gear up for the next general election with promises of social mobility, the question arises: Is PR truly an inclusive profession??Because according to experts, the industry might be missing out on some real talent. The recent Chartered Institute of Public Relations 75th anniversary issue of Influence featured interviews with PR pioneers who shaped the industry without attending university. Yet, today’s statistics paint a different picture: the Levelling Up Public Relations report found that nearly 86% of respondents had attended university, with their social background impacting career progression for over a quarter. But for PR professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds, ‘imposter syndrome’ and lack of familiarity with office culture can hinder progress. From accent discrimination to unpaid internships, barriers persist. And that’s damaging for PR: diversity is crucial for reflecting society accurately and delivering effective campaigns. It’s time to shatter the class ceiling and build a truly inclusive PR community.? #SocialMobility #DiversityandInclusion #PRComms https://lnkd.in/ezpH6c4x
