San Antonio, a city of confluence, has long served as a pivotal element in Texas’ evolution. Given its significant Latino majority and consistent economic growth, San Antonio is widely projected to be a rising figure in Texas’ unfolding narrative. Recent changes in the city reflect not only an acknowledgment of its rich cultural history but also the potential to shape the future. To harness this potential, we need to look beyond the Texas Triangle and turn our attention south, to a region that embodies Texas’ future in demographics, heritage, labor, and geography. We propose envisioning a new mega-region: the South Texas Triangle. This would connect San Antonio with Laredo, the Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi, and the northern Mexican states of Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon. We believe that the future is not a distant, predetermined endpoint but a collaborative and evolving process that we actively shape. The future is a collective project. For this reason, last year, we invited industry experts to explore with us the future of the South Texas Triangle region. Our goal is to create an inventory of the most pressing issues of our time and to explore the biggest opportunities we have to shape safe, inclusive, and sustainable cities. For this purpose,??we launched the series “SA Forward: South Texas Triangle,” a collaboration between the Better Futures Institute and the San Antonio Express-News. September is International Underground Railroad Month. The Underground Railroad, a period approximately between 1830 and the Civil War, is one of the first international Civil Rights movements. The Underground Railroad was not a physical railroad, but rather and invisible corridor.... a system of people, safe houses and routes that helped enslaved African Americans escape from slavery in the South. Freedom seekers traveled in whatever direction necessary to find a destination where they could live freely, and often this took them to Canada. Mexico and the Carribean. Much of the Underground Railroad activity took place along the Ohio River, which was a natural barrier separating slave states from so called free states. Ohio River towns in Kentucky have many stories of incredible courage and bravery in the critical role they played in helping enslaved people across the river to Ohio and Indiana. Falls of the Ohio, the historic area along the Ohio River, which includes Louisville and Portland in Kentucky and Clarksville, Jeffersonville and New Albany in Indiana, was one of the active in the Underground Railroad movement. One Underground Railroad story will be presented in a very creative way. Learn about the Kentuckiana Underground Railroad Project, a planned initiative of the Falls of the Ohio Foundation and partner organizations to create a light-based piece of public art interpreting and acknowledging the history of the Underground Railroad in the Falls of the Ohio area. https://lnkd.in/gm-e5e7y #undergroundrailroadd #fallsoftheohio

Interesting! The Great Saunter event, a 32-mile grand loop walk around the edges Manhattan. Increasingly, with the completion of pathways encircling the island, this kind of trek can become more broadly enabled. (In her piece, "Great Saunter Tips from Decades of Walking Around Manhattan" Sarah Milstein mentions that more segments of established pathways around the edges are falling into place.) Terrific to see the proliferation of these kinds of events, and, in the process, communities building this kind of walking green infrastructure! https://lnkd.in/gpE-C9F5

On the heels of this presentation (and thanks to APPI for having us!) and the Government of Canada's release of #Canada's #Housing Plan today -- I want to also acknowledge the efforts of so many -particularly Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) members and participants from across Canada- who drove the recommendations in this report, including some that are directly reflected in Canada's Housing Plan - specifically those that attach conditions to public transit funding. Municipalities and transit operators have an opportunity to look at how their housing and transit planning and operations are not just aligned, but strategically integrated to achieve outcomes around: - reducing dependence on personal vehicle ownership (the second largest driver of debt - thereby one of the most tangible ways to address affordability); - reducing GHGs; - supporting sustainable operations for transit operators; - getting more people on transit all times of day/days of the week (improving both the perception of and actual safety). So, when we talk ?? and affordability, we're gonna keep talking about ?? . P.S. David Cooper great best man speech.
I would like to thank the Alberta Professional Planners Institute and the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Northern Alberta Chapter for having Julianna Charchun and I this week to speak about the "Housing is on the Line" report and what it means for the integration of transit and housing in Alberta's Capital Region. It was great to share the insights of this national report to a sold out hometown audience. Also this was APPI/CITE's first luncheon at the new Canadian Ice House in Edmonton's growing Ice District. This photo looks like I am giving a speech at a wedding but I assure you that I was talking passionately about how important it is to build more housing on transit!

The case for old buildings: Southern US edition - Georgia historical context Newer isn’t always better, as we’ve come to learn. In many Georgia cities and towns, railroads and other transportation systems determined city location (which is why many cities are exactly 15 or 30 miles apart), and the heart of the city developed from that central point. These historic cores are typically comprised of 1 to 2 story tall buildings, often squeezed together where space allowed. With the passage of time and popularization of vehicular traffic, many of these cores have been split by highway systems that promised increased economic growth for the downtowns that they ran through. We know now that the increased speeds these highways bring are what led to the decay of so many rural downtowns, including my own. So, what’s the answer? While there’s not a one-size-fits-all solution, in my next post I will explore a few of the implementation tactics that I have watched over the last five years or so, and the varying levels and factors for success.
