Attorney Chase Velasquez will be one of the presenters at the 2024 Martz Symposium, taking a a deep dive into the rapid changes that are unfolding in real time and how they impact our relationship to the land. Public lands across the United States provide us with clean water, energy and food production, world-class recreational opportunities, wildlife habitat, and many other important values. Indigenous peoples have deep ties to the land informed by their traditional ecological knowledge. And public lands drive economic opportunities and job creation for rural communities. For all these reasons, the American public broadly supports the protection and sustainable use of public lands, yet they are facing unprecedented threats from resource degradation, climate change, the demands of multiple uses, and challenges in agency funding levels. For decades, SCCF has been leading our community in becoming a national model for coastal resilience. A key point in this history was the 1975 publication of "The Sanibel Report," commissioned by SCCF to provide a comprehensive scientific analysis of Sanibel’s natural systems. Learn more about the report, which helped inform the city’s land-use plan that continues to protect Sanibel today:? https://lnkd.in/dnMaqAGi

One important implication of our work: Cities experience the effects of adaptation actions almost immediately (less heat, flooding), but the effects of mitigation actions take longer and are global. Thus, adaptation action might be more politically popular. But adaptation can also have mitigation outcomes: Climate-resilient cities create better conditions for walking and biking. So there's hope for mitigation-via-adaptation led by cities, especially as we expect less action by the U.S. federal government (an euphemism).
Excited to share our first paper from a larger project on climate adaptation for active transportation. We found a complex network of barriers and facilitators to the implementation of such strategies. Climate adaptation is interdisciplinary work requiring collaborations across planning disciplines. I’m grateful to the Center for Climate Smart Transportation for funding this project. The paper is coauthored by a Department of City & Metropolitan Planning team including Nawshin Tabassum and Reid Ewing. Here’s the link (the first 50 visits should be open access): https://lnkd.in/g3RvBsFN
