SHARING GOOD PRACTICES ?? ?? Area of the ecological network Spa?va Basin is a lowland in eastern Slavonia and is covered with alluvial #oak forests. Different environmental pressures directly and indirectly affect the condition of these forests, and as the Slavonian oak is a competitive species, thriving primarily in optimal habitats, it reacts to any change in environmental factors with extreme vigour through changes in growth and development. These changes are characterised as negative by long-term studies. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that a Management Plan based on technical data is established. The institution in charge, the Public institution for #management of protected natural areas in Vukovar–Srijem County has been interviewed about this good practice. ? Why do you think that this GP is unique in your region? ?? The Management Plan was developed to present all key information succinctly and clearly about the area, to determine attitudes and areas of action through a participatory process, and to define goals and activities that guide the management of areas and resources of the Public Institution. The Management Plan helps the Public Institution to manage protected areas and ecological network areas effectively and sustainably in the long term. Specifically, it enables all stakeholders and the interested public to monitor the activities of the Public Institution and to participate in the management of the areas covered by the management plan through their own engagement, where possible. The management defines a vision that represents the desired state of the ecological network areas and protected areas in the future, with a series of activities established to achieve it over the next 10 years. ? Have you received any feedback from those people who are / were not involved in the implementation of your GP? If yes, what was their opinion about your GP? ?? Considering that we are only at the beginning of implementing the management plan, we have not received significant negative feedback. The few criticisms we have received mostly relate to a lack of information about the current state of the area and the elaboration of certain parts of the management plan, which can be improved over time during implementation. During the development process, we received a large number of positive feedback from key stakeholders in these areas, including the Croatian Forests and the Croatian Forest Research Institute. ?? Rewilding forest generates revenue for communities in the Iberian Highlands! ?? Exciting news! Fundación Espa?ola de Renaturalización - Rewilding Spain has signed its first agreement to protect 264 hectares of old-growth forest in the Serranía Alta de Cuenca region. By letting the forest naturally regenerate for 30 years without timber harvesting, we're creating a more sustainable future while offering vital income opportunities to the local community. ??? Letting #forests naturally regenerate is one of the most practical, immediate, and cost-effective ways of addressing our ecological and #climate emergencies. This agreement not only supports #biodiversity but also ensures economic stability by compensating the town council with 8,000 euros annually and trading the forest's carbon sequestration rights. Any additional revenue from #carbon trading goes directly to the community, providing a strong incentive for sustainable management. ?? Rodrigo Molina, mayor of Vega del Codorno, highlights the benefits for tourism and local businesses. This innovative approach could inspire more municipalities and landowners to join the #rewilding movement. Read the full story on our website to learn more about this milestone and its positive impact on nature and local communities ?? https://loom.ly/joeDSCE

WWF Espa?a and the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) have collaborated to produce the final version (4.0) of standards for certifying Mediterranean?forest?restoration projects in Spain, which was released in 2023 and officially presented at the premises of the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition last June.?This initiative has been financially supported by a private donor,?the?Audemars-Watkins Foundation. The Foundation's proposal seeks to expand the impact of these standards by exploring options for geographically broader application, and a?logical next step is to develop standards for certifying Mediterranean?forest?restoration projects at a basin-wide scale. Next week, SER-Europe and WWF Espa?a will host an online focus group discussion within a multidisciplinary team of experts representing leading organizations in the conservation of Mediterranean?forests, to?explore opportunities to upscale and outscale the strategy adopted by the previous project in other Mediterranean countries. The outcomes of this focus group discussion will be presented at the?8th Mediterranean Forest Week (MFW) held on 4-7 November in Barcelona, Spain. #ecologicalrestoration #Mediterraneanforests #8MFW

Urban Joins Forces for Beach Cleanup on World Environment Day! We're excited to share that on June 5, 2024, in celebration of World Environment Day, Urban deployed a dedicated team of five staff members to participate in a significant beach cleanup at Lung Kwu Sheung Tan in Tuen Mun. This initiative not only facilitated the cleaning of the coastline but also provided our team with invaluable insights into coastal ecology and sustainable practices, with a particular emphasis on the 'Leave No Trace' principle. By getting involved directly, our five dedicated staff members experienced the immediate effects of environmental preservation. This hands-on approach is a key part of our commitment to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint at Urban. Moreover, from June 5 to June 11, 2024, we participated in the 'Green Impact Challenge' as part of the 'Green Impact Go' initiative led by Green Power. This program aims to weave low-carbon practices into our everyday routines, promoting a culture of sustainability within our operations. Stay tuned! By adopting and promoting these sustainable practices, we at Urban are striving to influence not only our employees and tenants but also the wider community. #UrbanGroup #UrbanGroupHK #UrbanPropertyManagementLimited #PropertyManagement #FacilityManagement #BeachCleanUp #LowCarbonActions #GreenPower #GreenImpactGo #GreenImpactPartner #GreenImpactChallenge #Sustainability #EnvironmentalProtection

The Great Forests of Mesoamerica (Central America) concentrate between 7% and 10% of all known life forms and extend across 266 000 km2—twice the size of Greece. It is the geographical area in which the EU has deployed the Great Mesoamerican Forests Program, a flagship of the Global Gateway strategy in the region that has begun its implementation in 2024, with an EU contribution of EUR 25.5 million, under a Team Europe approach. EU Member States (MSs) such as France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and Spain are part of this joint intervention, and together with regional institutions and territorial partners aim for the conservation and protection of the biodiversity of these forests. The program is the EU's most ambitious regional commitment in this matter. Last February the Team Europe implementing agencies met in Costa Rica to begin its implementation during a two-day kick-off workshop. Realizing the importance of biodiversity In March 2024, Pierre-Louis Lempereur and Francois Roudié, respectively EU Ambassadors in Costa Rica and El Salvador/Central American Integration System walked in a tour through La Amistad (Costa Rica) and its surrounding. It is one of the Great Forests of Mesoamerica, at about 2,600 meters above sea. Together with officials from the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), community leaders and local partners, the Ambassadors learned about good practices by communities in the sustainable use of forest resources that the EU is interested in replicating and scaling up. To take stock of the importance of protecting this unique natural environment, the Ambassadors traveled through part of the 80 hectares of protected primary forest. In this area, a group of families decided to invest in a forest management approach far to the traditional model of indiscriminate logging. With this project, the EU and the MSs aims —among other things— to demonstrate that experiences such as that of don William Solano's farm can serve as a model to successfully merge forest conservation and sustainable economic development in Mesoamerica.
