Should I be scared yet? The other day I saw a video someone made, where they were speaking English, and then began speaking in German, French, Japanese, Spanish, and Italian. This was done by AI technology, that made it look like the person's mouth was moving with the words they were speaking. Most impressively, the speech did not sound robotic, there was intonation and expression, and it almost felt like you were actually listening to the person speak for real. Granted, the whole video was brief, and each language segment a little over 10 seconds, but it gave a taste of what's already possible, and what we may expect to see more of. After seeing the video, I kept thinking about what I should be doing to prepare for the future 5-10 years from now and beyond. I hear a lot of people saying "AI is here, you either embrace it or you'll be replaced by someone who does." That's not really where I see myself going. I have a team of incredibly talented multilingual professionals- and if someday machines start doing the work we do, then we'll need to find what other needs the world has that we can turn our talent to solving. Or perhaps our roles will adapt and become more interesting and complex then conveying information from one language to another. We may have to redefine what an interpreter is and does. But most importantly: as long as you still need our services, we'll be here for you. And if/when you don't, where do you think our team should turn our talents to next? #AI #singularity #AlwaysHuman
