We're thankful for everyone’s thoughts and offers to help remediate the mountain after Hurricane Helene's arrival. We're fortunate that no major damage was done to Roper Mountain. However, there are a lot of downed trees, which will take a while to clean up. We will be closed today, Thursday, and Friday, Oct. 4, for Afternoon Explorations and Friday Starry Nights. There has been no decision made for next week as of yet, but we will keep you posted on social media with updates as they become available. Thank you!

Hurricane Specialist John Morales visibly upset as he realizes Milton has become a Category 5 monster storm. "It's just an incredible, incredible,?incredible hurricane. It has dropped," he stopped. "It has dropped 50 millibars in 10 hours. I apologize. This is just horrific." Morales went on: "Maximum sustained winds are 160 mph. And it is just gaining strength in the Gulf of Mexico where the winds -- I mean, the seas, are just so, incredibly, incredibly hot. Record hot, as you might imagine. You know what's driving that....." Checked in on a friend in Florida. She's ready as she can be. Food, water, distiller, generator, petrol, cars filled, freeze dried emergency food. ?? She just moved there months ago. So nefarious all of this. Meanwhile Wyoming is burning. Turning Hurricane Lemons into Lemonade I was supposed to attend a conference this Thursday and Friday, but thanks to Hurricane Milton, it was canceled. Total lemons, right? But instead of letting that derail my plans, I realized I had already cleared my schedule from Wednesday afternoon through Friday night. So, I’m turning those lemons into lemonade and using that time for something powerful: working ON my business, not just IN it. Rather than getting caught up in busy work or post-hurricane cleanup, I’m dedicating these two solid days to focus on growth, strategy, and moving my business forward. Now, I’m curious—what strategies or hacks do you use to carve out time for business growth and avoid getting stuck in the daily grind? Let’s share some ideas to keep each other focused and moving ahead!

Lead Emergency Preparedness Specialist @ Fluor Federal Petroleum Operations | Emergency Management. Master Exercise Practitioner, LEM, PCP, NEMAA
The Memorial Day holiday next week also brings the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. I've been asked a lot over the last few weeks; "Are we ready?" My answer is always the same and has been for years; "Our response and continuity plans have been thoroughly reviewed and updated. Leadership has been briefed. We've conducted workshops for staff. There aren't any secrets. We're as ready as we can be." Then, without fail, the next statement always comes up. "They're predicting an active year!" We all have to remember that an "Active" Atlantic forecast covers the entire Atlantic Ocean Basin. Sure the Gulf of Mexico is there, so is Greenland and Norway. Once again, the best we can do as Emergency Managers is to ensure that our plans are reviewed to include any lessons learned and best practices from prior years, and to ensure our people know what to do to protect themselves and their families. Remember, even if there's only one major hurricane this year, if it comes your way, you've just had a very active year!

Hurricane Helene: Day 4 People had to be rescued. No water, no power, no cell service, no internet, no food, no drinking water. -> Just because it seems unlikely doesn’t mean it isn’t going to happen. My husband was prepared. The day before the hurricane hit, he had purchased a large chain and extra rope. Huh? -> The 7 P’s: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance - A kayak was pulled across the river carrying a 600 lb generator. - A pair of giant tree trunks was dragged to form a temporary walking bridge. - A line was run from shore to shore to ferry food and water. Sometimes, of course, you don’t always have what you need. —> Bricoleur Thinking - “a bricoleur” is a person who accomplishes what needs to be accomplished with the tools & resources at hand. What does my 78 year old mother do when she has to conserve her drinking water and has no other water available? Pull buckets from her koi pond. Now that’s bricolage. Whew, what will tomorrow bring, I wonder… _________ Joelle Thayer Bridging the gap between powerful leadership ideas and the real world.

Florida hurricane season, simplified: Category 1- you can’t even call off work, just another rainy day in Florida. Category 2- you get to stay home and watch Netflix for a day so make sure you have popcorn. Category 3- we might lose power for a couple hours so just make sure you have stuff to BBQ after because it’s always a beautiful day after a storm. Category 4- for sure no power and possible gators (mainland), crocs (Keys) and/or snakes floating in front of your house depending on how much rain. I don’t think they sell gator/croc/snake repellent but mosquito repellent and a generator would really help- best bet is to leave for a week or so. Category 5- If you stay, you die so there’s no need to prep for that. You’re welcome.
