An impressive trial to see how #wine drinkers took to #packaging alternatives to glass. From 1,300 responses from its members, The Wine Society (The International Exhibition Co-operative Wine Society Limited) found - 72% were satisfied with the quality of the wine from the glass-free format and - more than 90% are “likely to repurchase”. - Willingness to try other glass-free formats stood at 86%. - BiB (bag in a box) sold out very quickly while the rPET supplies lasted through the three-month trial. There are now plans to launch wider, ongoing ranges in these formats in the spring, and then next year set a target for the percentage of wine sold in “alternative, lower carbon packaging” by 2032. Vi?a Concha y Toro signs up to Sustainable Wine Round Table Bottle Weight Accord ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We are delighted to announce that Vi?a Concha y Toro has signed up to the Bottle Weight Accord drawn up by the Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR). Launched in November 2023, the SWR Bottle Weight Accord aims to reduce the carbon footprint of wine packaging. Initially supported by a group of retailers, its signatories now include wine businesses across the whole value chain. Participants commit to reducing the average weight of their 750ml still wine bottles to 420g or below by the end of 2026. Vi?a Concha y Toro or VCT, whose holding group of wineries includes world-renowned wine brands Casillero del Diablo from Chile, Trivento from Argentina, and Bonterra in California, produces circa 384 million bottles of wine annually. VCT Sustainability Director Valentina Lira comments: “This is an important and valuable step for our business. As part of our overall Sustainability Strategy, VCT is already involved in many key initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint, and the fact that key retailers from around the world are also signatories to the Bottle Weight Accord gives it extra impact and influence. “We are confident that we are well on the way to the 420g average thanks to great efforts made by our product design, packaging, production, and sustainability teams to date. This is just the first step for us as we look to continue reducing the weight of our bottles and incorporate new formats in the future. The Drinks Business recently published an article about our most recent initiative titled The International Reuse Ready Charter. This is a result of last year's Bottle Collection Initiative which took place at London Wine Fair in 2023. The “Reuse Ready Charter” will consider action points which the industry – throughout the supply chain – can adopt. The intention was to assess if – in the current state of play – a reusable supply chain could be a possibility and what would need to happen for this to become a reality. Packaging innovation from ALPLA Group who have developed a new PET wine bottle. It certainly brings a different perspective to wines- and this can be made entirely from rPET- significantly reducing carbon emissions & lowering the cost of packaging for winery customers.
