Something that must be said… People don’t go into policing to enforce the law. We do it to give back. We do it to help people in their worst moments. And we do it to provide hope. Service, Pride and Dedication are more than just words on a patch. They embody the core of who we are as a department. And for too long, we have allowed people, who lack context and perspective, to define us. The members of the Seattle Police Department make me most proud in stories that will never be printed. You serve and protect people you’ve never met before and will never see again. And you confront violence the rest of the world will hopefully never witness. To be seen and heard is to feel valued. And every day you give our city reason to hope. It has been my honor to serve as your Chief of Police for the past four years. And it is my hope that this department continues to build on the legacy of service and excellence. If we have learned anything the last few years, it’s that policies aren’t promises of perfection and justice is not always blind. And when we fail to see the importance of Service, Pride and Dedication, we miss the meaning of the matter, altogether. The Seattle Police Department is A Force for Healing… As an ever-evolving agency, we know our true strength lies in our ability to be vulnerable with our community. See the hope in this department. And when you do… I hope you see the humanity that is SPD. #relationalpolicing #seattlepolice #inpursuitofexcellence

JC Co-founder Tracey Meares discusses her article, “The Good Cop: Knowing the Difference Between Lawful or Effective Policing and Rightful Policing — And Why it Matters.” Prof. Meares describes the two traditional roles of policing as they function under the law and in fighting crime. These two roles place the responsibility of policing on the behavior of citizens. But Prof. Meares suggests a third role, rightful policing, that places the emphasis on procedure, fairness, and transparency of conduct of the police while interacting with the public. https://lnkd.in/esJcY7YN

Honored to join this esteemed panel of lawyers at the 99th Annual National Bar Association Convention to discuss the importance of implementing effective methods that ensure police accountability. We will present different perspectives from Civil Rights Attorneys, Professor, Prosecutor and Inspector General, and why this requires a multi-faceted approach involving police and sheriff's departments, government agencies, community organizations, and the public. By fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and mutual respect, these measures can help build trust and ensure that police officers serve and protect their communities effectively and justly.

?? Policing has undergone significant transformations throughout U.S. history. From the Political Era to the Reform and Community Problem-Solving Eras, strategies have evolved in response to societal needs. Understanding this evolution is vital for today’s criminal justice professionals. As we look to the future, it's crucial to remember our roots and learn from the past. Policing that encompasses not only law enforcement but also social services, community partnership, and progressive reform can pave the way for more equitable and effective practices. I am keen to connect with fellow professionals in the criminal justice field who are passionate about shaping a future where policing aligns with community collaboration and societal justice. "It is rarely recognized that the conduct of police may be related in a fundamental way to the character and goals of the institution itself—the duties police are called on to perform, associated with the assumptions of the system of legal justice—and that it may not be officers who are good or bad, so much as the premises and design of the system in which they find themselves." Jerome Skolnick, an esteemed academic who taught at prestigious institutions like Yale University, University of California, Berkeley, and New York University, revolutionized the understanding of the police "working personality" with his groundbreaking work, "Justice Without Trial." Skolnick emphasized the deep-rooted connection between police behaviour and the inherent characteristics and objectives of the justice system. He highlighted that the effectiveness of law enforcement is intricately linked to the framework within which officers operate, rather than solely to individual officers' moral compass. This insight underscores the significance of systemic factors in shaping police conduct and performance. #PoliceReform #JusticeSystem #LawEnforcement #Skolnick #JusticeWithoutTrial #PoliceCulture
