I recently came across an inspiring story about Adrian Carton de Wiart, a soldier who endured unimaginable challenges yet maintained a positive perspective. It got me thinking about how we approach setbacks in business. Often, it’s not the challenges that define us but how we choose to see and respond to them. It has been an incredible experience working at the Pentagon these past three years. I’m excited about the next chapter but will miss the unique challenges while assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps. I was in awe of the talented professionals I had the privilege to work alongside and wish them continued success as they seek to achieve commander’s intent. Some parting thoughts to anyone that is offered the opportunity: 1. Be impeccable with your word: Speak with integrity and take heed what you say of your seniors. Word travels fast and the gun club has a long memory. Be part of the solution rather than venting about the problems. 2. Be bold and provide best military advice: Honest feedback is welcomed and required to move us forward. We owe our peers, our seniors, and ultimately our Marines our best effort. Be proficient in your assignment and seek to be a professional in every sense of the word. 3. Don’t take criticism personally: Learn through your failures and be hypercritical of the product, process, and your own shortcomings. You will fail, you will be stressed, and ultimately you will grow with a positive attitude and firm resolve. Be resilient. 4. Validate assumptions, identify risks, and present options: Warfare is hard. Planning is essential. There are often no good answers, but you have to create decision space and provide options for senior leaders to make the best decision with the information at their disposal. 5. Find your balance: Your best is going to change from moment to moment. Find what works for you to bounce back, recharge, and continue the advance. It will be a grind at times but your efforts will have wide ranging impact. Embrace the challenge but burnout is real. Leaders must invest in themselves too. 6. The family you invest in now will be the family you have at the end of your service: Work will often take priority so be present in the moments that matter. Communicate early and often. It is a team sport and your spouse is a critical component to your success. 7. Enjoy the ride: You will be afforded opportunities to work with and serve under some of our best leaders the nation has to offer. Take the wins when you can get them. Remember your customer. Your work contributes to ensuring the Marine forward deployed has the equipment, training, and appropriate organization necessary to achieve success. Prescient words in Consulting, Contracting, the Military, and Business in General

When we have this organization up and running correctly we can have dozens or maybe hundreds of salespeople spread out all over the world far away from headquarters and possibly not really seeing the people from headquarters more than once a year. We may also have a half dozen or a dozen people in headquarters… whose jobs are focused on the international market and we have to communicate information among everybody. Not to slip back into military metaphors but people like to talk about Sun Tzu the Chinese military philosopher and I think one of his chapters that people get most wrong is his chapter on communication. People very often don't understand the value and importance of internal communication in business and especially to sales. In warfare they say there are three elements of the effectiveness of a military unit: communication, mobility and firepower. If you don't have communication and mobility all firepower is simply whatever is in one spot at one time and you can't generate additional firepower or scale up. Why am I babbling about firepower when I'm talking about sales? If we are dealing with selling internationally and we are dealing with essentially a long line of people between where the product is manufactured and where the customer is. the communication must be stellar? and crystal clear and this is one of those areas with a great deal of failure. #internationalsales #sales #globalsalesmentor

Performance vs Trust: How to Choose the Right People for Your Team I stumbled upon this video, while I was going through performance and trust matrix this morning. This video shook me with the importance of trust over performance and learnt to choose someone who may not be the best performer but is trustworthy over someone who is high performing but untrustworthy. And this is different in the way businesses operate. Companies have many metrics to measure performance and skills with minimal to no metrics to measure someone’s trustworthiness. What are your thoughts? Should performance and trust be given equal importance in the workplace?
