Primary Health Care, Inc (PHC) was founded in 1981 with a mission to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status or ability to pay. PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, pharmacy, homeless support services and more. In 2023, the Community Foundation was pleased to award a leadership grant to PHC to expand the University Medical Clinic, which is focused on addressing health disparities and providing access to medical and mental health care. After a long and impactful career with PHC, CEO Kelly Huntsman is retiring at the end of 2024. These efforts are commendable and will hopefully lead to improvements across all racial/ethnic groups and marginalized populations, taking into account their unique circumstances and needs. While the CDC's AtlasPlus database shows an increase in primary and secondary syphilis rates among almost all racial/ethnic groups between 2021 and 2022, collaboration of federal, state, and local authorities, alongside community-based initiatives, is needed to ensure a future where these trends can be reversed, and health equity achieved for all. #syphilis #healthequity

If untreated, it can cause serious health issues. ?? It’s a sneaky disease. It can mimic many other health conditions. ?? In 2024 alone, 8 million syphilis cases were reported around the world. ?? Syphilis is increasing in pregnant women, affecting their unborn babies and newborn children. ?? Syphilis is treatable and curable. People who suspect they may have syphilis should speak to their healthcare provider. How does one get syphilis? ?? By having sex with an infected person ?? From mother to child ?? During blood transfusion People with multiple sexual partners are at greater risk of getting syphilis. What are the symptoms? The majority of people don’t have any symptoms. Some may experience: ???? I spent 25 years working on HIV, TB, malaria, dengue, rabies and child health in low- & middle-income countries. 7 years ago, I shifted to tobacco control. I can still see this field from the outside. This conversation is a must-see. Worth reading on the difference between disrupting ongoing harm - even if it harms your own career - compared to optics of #DEI we see a lot today. There are aspects of the dismantling of corporate DEI happening right now that I'm not angry about if it were just, as Lauren R. Powell, MPA, PhD points out below, just water bottles or posters with logos on them. There is a need to do deep systemic change that is hard and dangerous as it gets blowback. Many change agents - like Dr. ?Ignaz Semmelweis who suggested doctors needed to wash their hands https://lnkd.in/eUrB9rZ7 - are smeared, called crazy, etc. If you look at history, it is a thankless job that may land you in an asylum or a penniless and on the streets. That is another thing I find among "advocates" today - they think it is societal change by callout, screenshot, and hashtag and "gotcha" #socialmedia. That is "performative" and virtue signaling over the hard, invisible, consistent work or the self sacrifice that will not lead to praise, likes, or fame. Being an influencer is not the same as making a difference. Admittedly, for myself, I have stepped back from some of the intensity of my own prior #advocacy after I needed six blood transfusions from late diagnosed #anemia. Told I was too privileged, I felt constant guilt. I've come to realize that I'm facing the same issues that other women and women of color face and am not some Amazon or superwoman. I'm human. There is no benefit to others from my falling ill. I also saw how was not there for my later mother when she most needed me because I was answering to every call for help while my stoic dignified mother never asked for anything. I'm paying more attention to those who are quiet and not doing the callouts. Whose voices and needs are not being heard? So now I'm working on how we can democratize access to your own data, use data to be "heard", have empower women at scale via better patient-system coordination and, with better data lakes, to build better #AI. The days of leaving people untreated to watch them be consumed by preventable disease should be in the past. Why not allow patients to be partners with us on understanding disease and promoting health?
