Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to make significant contributions to the health of individuals, communities, and populations. Working alongside doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers, pharmacists play an essential role in advancing public health by improving access to care and delivering services that promote wellness and disease prevention. A few takeaways: 1. There is an opportunity to increase awareness of the full scope of services pharmacists provide beyond medication dispensing, such as health screenings, chronic disease management, and facilitating interventions or referrals. 2. By strengthening collaboration between pharmacists and healthcare teams, we can offer more integrated, patient-centered care that addresses individual and community health needs comprehensively. 3. Investing in the necessary infrastructure and workflow efficiencies can help effectively sustain and expand non-dispensing services. I may not have been able to turn the lights off in solidarity today, due to my workplace location and public impact. But I can help spread the word. We need to be a solid profession standing up for our value to society, the healthcare system, as a clinical profession in its own right. We need to be solid to ensure positive outcomes for patients and effective support for GP practices in local communities: 1. **Patient Safety**: A strong pharmacy profession ensures vigilant management of drug interactions, side effects, and correct dosages, maintaining high standards of patient safety despite decentralisation. 2. **Healthcare Accessibility**: A solid profession guarantees that essential healthcare advice, screenings, and immunisations provided by pharmacists remain readily available, enhancing support for GP practices and benefiting underserved areas. 3. **Medication Management**: With increasing medication use for chronic diseases, a robust pharmacy profession ensures pharmacists effectively manage complex regimens, improving adherence and health outcomes within local communities. 4. **Public Health**: Pharmacists play a crucial role in disease prevention and health education. A strong profession ensures these contributions remain impactful, promoting wellness and preventing disease spread, thus supporting GP practices in public health initiatives. 5. **Economic Efficiency**: A stable pharmacy profession helps prevent medication errors and optimise drug therapy, contributing to cost-effective healthcare and relieving pressure on GP practices. 6. **Advancing Medical Knowledge**: Pharmacists' involvement in research and new drug development ensures continued medical advancements, providing innovative therapies and supporting GP practices with the latest treatment options. 7. **Regulatory and Ethical Standards**: A solid pharmacy profession upholds high regulatory and ethical standards, maintaining public trust and ensuring consistent quality of care across all service models. Overall, a strong pharmacy profession is essential for maintaining effective, efficient, and safe healthcare services, enhancing support for GP practices, and delivering positive outcomes for patients in local communities. We just need to be funded correctly to deliver this effectively. Let’s stop the closures and pay pharmacies properly.

In partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health, the College of Pharmacy developed a map of pharmacy access gaps across the state to consolidate important data amid a national trend of pharmacy closures. “This isn't just a pharmacy need, this is a state need,” Dr. Todd Sorensen said. “The evidence of this is that the Department of Health has declared health equity as one of its top priorities— and patient access to pharmacy services is a health equity issue.” Read more and see the map → https://bit.ly/3DqPn5P

HSC Report and the "broken community pharmacy framework" The recent release of the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee report into Pharmacy highlights “a broken community pharmacy framework” in England, a position many people within Numark and the wider Phoenix Group have been saying for years.?To be fair to my colleagues at Community Pharmacy England it has been its position for a long time as well and highlighted through the evidence presented to the committee. The report further highlights the challenge of medicines shortages which doubled in number from 2021 to 2022 and affects the whole supply chain, a position that the Numark / Phoenix partnership is uniquely qualified to comment on through its end-to-end process. A glimmer of optimism is included when expansion of community pharmacy services is recommended with Pharmacy First given a specific mention. I’m sure there will be learnings from the excellent Pharmacy First approach deployed in Scotland that could be considered in other countries – a topic for an upcoming post!?Workforce challenges and opportunities close the report and is an area I know the Numark team are working on to support our community pharmacy members with innovative technician funding solutions. It will be for the new government to pick up and implement the recommendations of the report and Numark is more than willing to play its part. What is encouraging as the General Election activity ramps up is that all published manifestos, so far, make a commitment to supporting the community pharmacy network and its service expansion.

Supply situation for medicines for children and adolescents anything but pleasing! Every one of us would like to have approved medicines available for children. Unfortunately, the approval situation is anything but pleasing. However, this is also partly due to the fact that we 1. have few resources to conduct clinical trials in the population of children and adolescents 2. the willingness to pay for approved drugs is comparatively low, especially in anesthesia (people tend to switch to compromise solutions and drugs with which they have had "good experiences" off-label) 3. the effort involved in conducting clinical trials, particularly in the pediatric field, is immense. In this respect, all efforts to improve the approval situation for children and pediatric drugs are to be welcomed. Not least in the area of preventing nausea and vomiting after anesthesia (PONV). This can be understood as a call to participate if resources are available: https://lnkd.in/e_Tb-tbZ
