?? Ever wonder how your waste is recycled in Boulder? ?? We did too! That curiosity led RockyTech to visit The Boulder County Recycling Center (BCRC) and Eco-Cycle CHaRM (Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials)—two remarkable facilities driving sustainability in our community. The experience was eye-opening, and we walked away with a deeper understanding of how innovation and community engagement come together to create real change. ??Here’s what we learned: ?? Insights from BCRC At BCRC, we learned how traditional recycling systems work, including the sorting, baling, and preparation of recyclables for reprocessing. The meticulous planning and state-of-the-art equipment ensure Boulder County stays ahead in waste management. ?? Key Takeaways 1?? Recycling is only part of the solution—reducing and reusing are just as critical. 2?? Technology like AI and robotics is making recycling smarter, faster, and more impactful. 3?? Collaboration between community, industry, and innovation can drive meaningful progress toward a sustainable future. ??? Specialized Processing at CHaRM CHaRM is a game-changer for hard-to-recycle materials. They handle everything from electronics and appliances to hard plastic materials that typically don’t make it into curbside recycling bins. This ensures items that would otherwise end up in landfills get a new lease on life. ?? AI-Powered Efficiency One of the most fascinating things we saw was the AI-driven robots from AMP in action. These robots use advanced vision systems to: ?? Precisely identify and sort recyclable materials at high speed. ? Improve efficiency while reducing contamination rates. ?? Maximize the quality of recovered materials, making recycling more effective than ever. ?? Sustainability Goes Beyond Recycling CHaRM isn’t just about what happens to waste—it’s about changing mindsets. Their community programs teach us to think critically about consumption, reduce waste at the source, and embrace sustainable habits in everyday life. A massive thanks to the dedicated teams at BCRC, Eco-Cycle CHaRM, and Michelle Gazarik for giving us a behind-the-scenes look at how they’re leading the charge in sustainable waste management. #Sustainability #Innovation #Recycling #AI #EcoCycle #CHaRM #Boulder

It was a pleasure touring with you and learning about your interests in single-stream recycling and hard-to recycle items. I have one clarification: CHaRM used to accept yoga mats, but no longer has a downstream customer to purchase them. Yoga mats are an illustration of how ever-changing and fragile recycling markets can be. The plastic foam of yoga mats also illustrates how difficult it is to recycle certain plastics. We are grateful for the work you do at RockyTech to research future recycling solutions for hard-to-recycle plastics outside of single-stream collection.
