Thank you to all who joined us for a day of learning and fun at Tuff’s Ranch. Over 29 kids enjoyed a jam-packed day with farm animals, cooperative games, planting succulents, and making new friends! The day was made possible by our East Adams/Arapahoe County Farmers Union Chapter, which provided the location and lunch. Thanks to grill master Michelle Skaggs and our RMFU Board Member Barb Marty for helping with all the details throughout the day.

Why are these roosters special? Simply put they are alive. Typically, roosters are culled right after birth because they don't lay eggs and don't grow as fast as broiler chickens. At Kipster, we believe the brothers of layer hens deserve more than just a day of life. That's why these fellows are special. Unfortunately, there's no infrastructure to make meat from them in the U.S. yet. To avoid having to cull chicks we commit to using a new technology, called in-ovo, that determines whether the chick is male or female while still in the egg. This way, male chicks don't have to be born at all. We plan to start using this technology in October. In the meantime, unfortunately, we still have to end the lives of the roosters when they hatch. #stopcullingroosters #inovo #foodchain #Kipster #roosters #eggs #nomalechickculling ASPCA The Humane Society of the United States Mercy For Animals The Humane League

Mindi Callison, Executive Director of Bailing Out Benji, is a wise and thoughtful leader. When she writes “[d]eep in in the policy talk, the goals, and the strategic plans, we all seem to have lost the plot,” she is reminding us not to become so attached to our preferred solutions or long-standing strategies that we lose sight of our end goal. Strategic plans are really important, but they should be designed with the flexibility to respond to an ever-changing world and new learnings. And remember: our ultimate goal is to create a more humane world for everyone, and all forms of human and non-human exploitation have the same roots. How do we avoid upholding/leveraging these underlying systems of oppression/exploitation in pursuit of short-term wins for our single issue? How do we conduct our advocacy in ways that contribute to the dismantling of systems that underlie all forms of human and non-human exploitation while simultaneously furthering our singe-issue/cause? I believe Mindi and her team are going to show us the way.? (and if you are interested in hearing more from Mindi, there is still time to register for her 9/26 webinar: https://lnkd.in/gtjsNity) https://lnkd.in/gdKAjzRN #animalwelfare #animalrights #strategicplanning #socialjustice #leadership #puppymills #animals #dogs #companionanimals

LSP is moving in the right direction. Every conversation offers some level of value.
Yesterday we had a conversation with a state representative to talk through our motives for our organization, and the legal changes we're hoping to see down the road. Particularly, these changes pertain to implementing stronger laws for commercial and hobby breeders in order to reduce the animal overpopulation epidemic that is having a ripple effect on other issues within our community. The high level message I received from this representative was that people love Tennessee because of the lack of regulations, which is fair. This is also a summary of the response I received: If we add regulations to hobby breeding, where does it end? Do we regulate what people are selling downtown in our city? We're here to very confidently say that we believe that selling clothing is far different than selling puppies. In fact, one breathes and one does not. It's important to remember that LSP's mission is to ?????????????????????????????? evolve our laws so as not to simply ban these breeding activities, but to ensure that people are doing it responsibly. We embrace the challenges we encounter because they help us approach these issues from every angle. While these may feel like "deflating" moments, they push us to empower ourselves with more knowledge.

??Did you know Black cowboys were skilled horsemen, expert cattle wranglers, and masters of the open range. While cowboy culture in the United States is typically linked to white men from the western states, black individuals have also played a significant role in this iconic American way of life. Following the Civil War in the late 19th century, many freed slaves found employment as cowboys on cattle ranches spread across the West. Despite encountering discrimination and segregation, these black cowboys made crucial contributions to the frontier's development. These black cowboys demonstrated their proficiency as horsemen, cattle handlers, and open range experts, enduring long hours and harsh conditions in their work. Despite facing prejudice and unequal treatment, they gained recognition for their dedication and hard work in their profession. Cowboy culture in the United States has a longstanding history, with a notable image of individuals thriving in the open range. However, the representation of black individuals within this culture has been underrepresented and disregarded for several years. Even though African American cowboys have played a prominent role throughout history, their contributions have frequently been disregarded or minimized. From the frontier days of the Wild West to contemporary rodeo contests, black cowboys have significantly influenced cowboy culture. Enduring racial discrimination and bias, they have persisted through their love for this way of life. In recent times, initiatives have aimed to highlight the narratives of black cowboys and cowgirls, illuminating their experiences and impact on the cowboy lifestyle. Events like the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo pay tribute to the accomplishments of black rodeo performers and acknowledge their position in cowboy history. Presently, black cowboys uphold their place in American cowboy culture, with organizations such as the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum dedicated to safeguarding and advancing their heritage. By acknowledging the contributions of black cowboys, we salute an essential segment of American history and celebrate the diversity within our nation's cultural legacy. #ChangePolicy

In US history, Black cowboys are a threat to Manifest Destiny. This idea that white Americans were divinely ordained and destined to settle all of North America excludes Black and Brown folks by design. As a 19th century belief, it contributed to the cowboy film aesthetic during the 1920s and 1930s. By aesthetic, I mean the whitewashing and erasure of Black frontier figures in the Wild West. Cowboy films were blockbusters during the 1920s and 1930s. They offered an escape from the Great Depression and offered heroes who were ruggedly individualistic. THE STORIES WE TELL These stories explain how the West was "won", how the Natives (usually painted as villains) were "conquered", and offer ideas about why so-called civilization was necessary in the first place. All of this storytelling is offered from a particular lens that erases Black historical figures and denies their deep rooted ties to breaking horses and establishing agrarian traditions. It also erases how they established agency post-enslavement. One possible example is famous all-American TV show. A historian has been examining if "The Lone Ranger" is in fact a whitewashing of Bass Reeves. Reeves was a formerly enslaved man who became a legendary lawman in the Wild West. He knew the languages of many Indigenous tribes, was a deputy marshal, and arrested more than 3,000 people and killed 14 outlaws. REINSERTING HISTORY There have been 10 notable portrayals of Bass Reeves in film and TV. Previous actors who have portrayed him include Gary Beadle, Colman Domingo, and Adrien Holmes. David Oyelowo's performance in Lawman: Bass Reeves is the most recent. Read more through the links in my comments. #thestorieswetell #thestorieswesell

?? It's a dark day for this cute yellow fellow. He’s going to be culled. Every day, around 850,000 (!) male chicks in the U.S. face this fate. Male chicks don’t lay eggs (duh). That's why it's common practice in the egg industry to kill them as soon as they hatch. ?? At Kipster, we believe you deserve to know the good, the bad, and the ugly behind your delicious eggs ?? That's why we've raised our roosters for meat. But there's no infrastructure in the U.S. yet to convert it to meat for consumers. To avoid this practice, we're planning to use in-ovo technology to determine the gender of the birds in the eggs and end their lives prematurely in a more humane way.?? #EthicalEating #stopcullingroosters #eggs #roosters #animalwelfare
