The best interviewees know how to pick up on the cues. When an interviewer keeps probing ?? Your answers might be too surface-level. Try adding more details to the next answer. When an interviewer redirects your answer ?? You might not be answering the question. If you don't understand what is being asked, try asking for clarification. When an interviewer asks multiple questions about a certain topic ?? This is likely a core competency that's being evaluated. Share your highlight reel with data-based impact. ? Ask open ended questions? Listening to the answers is the real job. It’s easy to ask closed-ended questions because we often know the sort of answer we’re looking for, and it’s so easy to bake that in to the question. But you’ll get richer information, and be able to create more compelling insights if you listen. If you’re really listening, you’ll be able to ask follow up questions. Follow ups are much harder than scripted questions. You’ve got to come up with them in real time, while also listening, while also keeping the interview on track. And that’s the real challenge.

Public panels or interviews can leave us in quicksand. As a panel interviewer myself, I dread seeing unprepared speakers flounder and lose credibility. Sadly, there's not a lot to be done by that point. So when preparing clients for panels, we: ? Research both audience and interviewer/panelists. ? Ensure clarity of the message to be shared. ? Manage tone of voice: conversational not confrontational. ? Adopt good posture to convey poise. ? Distinguish between what is said & what is implied. ? Learn when, and when not, to challenge a comment. ? Consider best strategies for unexpected/hostile questions. ? Identify 3 we would hate to be asked. ? Rehearse answering them so difficult moments are anticipated. ? Ensure gravitas is always conveyed. ??We only have one chance to convey our message during a live event. ??And can never unsay what has been said. It really is that black and white. #panels #gravitas #effectivecommunication
