With the creation of the global fund on loss and damage at COP28 and the recent nomination of the board of the fund, we now have the opportunity to build a new fund that will help the most vulnerable countries respond to loss and damage associated with the adverse effects of climate change. MOBILIZE LOSS AND DAMAGE FUND, DISBURSE IMMEDIATELY, SABER ASKS GLOBAL LEADERS

This is a moment of truth for global finance! This is not the time for complacency. Now is the time to elevate our collective ambition- and to deliver on it. To achieve this, we must confront a sobering reality: institutions forged in the 20th century are struggling to meet the demands of the 21st. The frameworks and mechanisms that once served us well are now falling short in the face of escalating climate challenges. A comprehensive reform of the global finance ecosystem is imperative. This means reimagining the roles and responsibilities of every stakeholder involved-from multilateral development banks and multilateral climate funds to private sector players, philanthropies, and civil society organizations. Each of these entities holds a piece of the puzzle, and only through coordinated and inclusive approach and action, where all of them should be part of the debate and discussion, can we hope to mobilize the necessary resources and expertise and to level up to meet the existential climate challenge Moreover, we must address systemic issues within the financial landscape itself. Credit rating agencies, for instance, need to evolve to better assess and support sustainable investments. Additionally, we must confront the unintended consequences of regulatory policies that, while designed to prevent financial crises, inadvertently stifle the flow of capital to developing countries. These policies need to be recalibrated to ensure they do not become barriers to the very progress they seek to protect. This is moment of truth for global finance. Every part of the system - from the largest multilateral institution to the smallest philanthropic initiative- must work in concert. In 2023, the Lloyd's market, including MS Amlin, supported a debt-for-nature swap to help Ecuador reduce its debt burden and invest in marine conservation in the Galapagos Islands. The deal highlights the critical role the Lloyd’s market can play in financing the transition to net-zero and driving capital toward nature-positive projects. ? As part of our Environmental Stress Testing and Scenarios project (https://lnkd.in/gQBjGpiv), happy to share a recent publication by UK Centre for Greening Finance and Investment (CGFI) fellow, Dr Chris Cormack, "Sovereign Climate-Contingent Convertible Bonds," co-authored with Dr. Andrea Macrina. This note expands upon the Climate Contingent Convertible Bond (i.e., CloCo) - see https://lnkd.in/gph2g6ve - which allows the issuer to convert a bond to equity contingent on changes in climate policy; and focuses on mechanisms for sovereigns. It introduces the sovereign CloCo (S-CloCo) to provide a mechanism to enhance climate transition funding. S-CloCo can be applied across different challenges, including adaptation and industry; and would assist in reducing public debt burdens while operating alongside privately issued CloCos. To do so, it introduces two S-CloCo mechanisms: (i) the Sovereign Influence Mechanism (SIM) to leverage opportunities from private sector issuances, utilising a sovereign wealth fund (SWF); and (ii) the direct SWF mechanism (DSM) that is underwritten by equity holdings. #climate #nature #sovereign #bond #equity #wealthfund #privatesector #publicsector

"Fortunes of War" - a new ABC article released today, using the relatively innovative mixed-media scrolling format, blending animation, imagery and variable data sets - a good way to communicate a challenging story; AustralianSuper are leading the rankings with $34.2M of their 'socially aware' superannuation invested in weapons, then Aware Super, UniSuper and onwards. It's a real challenge when you look through the list of companies the supers have on the books, and the consideration that they are 'universal owners' as the term goes, having spread so broadly throughout society, is volvo delivering thousands of vehicles for military transport considered profiting from war? That's not to say firing millions of shells of depleted uranium into tanks, people and the country side, and profiting from it, isn't an obvious and aggregious display of greenwashing in the first instance. And within this highly profitable market place of death, when our superannuation funds are legally required to ensure they maximise returns or face the consequences of a regulator and even having to advise their own clients to find a new fund if they underperform, the competing pressures are enourmous.
