Where are we going? ?? Sailing Lessons - Chapter 1 Day sailing the rocky archipelago of the Salish Sea (the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada) is no place to say “We’ll see where the wind blows us.” Day by day you must know where you are going among those remote rocky shores. We often start our trips more rustic and save the luxurious marina and spa for the last night (or two!). First, we need to be prepared for a remote anchorage with provisions, and some of us need to mentally prepare for a night with only modest battery power. These evenings, reading a book, playing cards, and admiring perfect sunsets are the best. We consider which bay will be sheltered based on the prevalent wind direction. A wavy and windy night can be very unsettling. We always have to avoid any anchorage that is too shallow or too crowded. A sailboat doesn’t belong there. And for the grande finale, we plan an early landfall so we can enjoy the amenities and the creature comforts. And the whole day - the whole trip - is an exercise in reaching those milestones. The same is true in law practice - or any business, really. You need to have a vision - short term and long term. Sometimes to imagine the grand vision, you need some solitude and reflection. Certainly, you need to tool up and be prepared for some lean and challenging times. You need to find your niche. Avoid the constant struggle to be something you are not. You need to avoid merely being among the pack; Be exceptional! And when you arrive at your ultimate destination - and at each milestone along the way - celebrate!
