Happy Star Wars Day everyone! Yes…this is the droid you are looking for! Bobby Carlton met the new BD-X droid, a free-roaming droid you’ll find at Disney’s Galaxy’s Edge, during a Robotics Summit & Expo session led by The Walt Disney Company Imagineers/roboticists Tony Dohi, Morgan Pope, and Moritz Baecher. The trio walked the packed room through their process of designing robotics to bring characters like a BD-X droid to life. One interesting fact is Disney approaches every robotics goal with a custom solution. From hardware to software. Something we do here at FS Studio on the software side incredibly well. One project was work we did for a client where our team did custom IK, pathplanning, along with a lot more work including building the workcell, to mimic human movement with a UR cobot arm. This was then used across hundreds of distributed robots AND we also did a custom motion capture and human hand pose detection and tracking to transfer that learning to the arm. We are proud of the work we do in robotics. And it’s hard to be in this industry and not appreciate something like Star Wars Day.
